Deal requires purchase of an AT&T PREPAID phone from either a Walmart store or from walmart.com. It does not have to be a smartphone. The Cingular Flip 2 also works.
If you have no intention of using the Walmart phone and want to swap to a different phone, verify the Walmart phone you buy has the same size SIM card as the phone you want to use (most use nanoSIM cards these days). To be safe, use the Walmart phone until your bonus data appears on your account.
Online activation does not give you an option to port your number. It will only give you a new number based on the zip code you enter during activation. Try calling customer service to activate if you wish to port your number over.
If you activated your phone with a new number and wish to port your old number over to it after the fact, read the warning below:
Warning about porting after activation: YMMV Several users are reporting that they aren't receiving the 17GB of bonus data after porting their number over and only receiving 8GB of bonus from the regular AT&T deal. Many are getting the runaround and being told to wait the entire 10 days to see if the full 17GB shows up. At least one user has so far and still hasn't received it. AT&T has escalated their case and they're waiting to hear back (https://slickdeals.net/forums/showpost.php?p=

This deal is valid until first week of September. Spoke with a ATT rep last night, she said this is a new deal and she will be following my account to see if I get 17 GB bonus or not because I changed the sim, phone and port in my number on the same day (7/3) I bought the prepaid cards. Still waiting for 17 GB bonus data to kick in

The plan data section showed "Plan Data (includes 8 GB Rollover Data)" with "16 GB of 16 GB Remaining". (since I didn't touch my plan data the prior month, all 8GB rolled over).
Going to call AT&T in the morning to see what the 15.7 GB bonus data is all about.

6/15: Ordered two prepaid Cingular flip phones from Walmart.com
6/17: Phones arrived.
6/18: Went to an AT&T "authorized retailer" to port AT&T postpaid numbers to prepaid. Was told that I had to go to do that at a AT&T "corporate store". So I went to one, and was told by a manager that it can't be done "because both lines were AT&T".
6/19: Activated new lines for both new phones using the deal link [att.com], and set up Auto-Pay.
6/20: Was somehow double charged for one line.
6/22: Double data showed up for both lines. Called 611 and asked about the 17 Gb promotion. Was told that the remainder would show up before 10 days of activation date (6/29).
6/22: Called 866 608 3007 to request and received a refund for double charge.
6/26: Called 611 to ask about the 17 GB promotion again. Was again told to wait to 6/29, and that the data will arrive then, and that "a note" has been added to my account so that someone will manually do it.
6/29: As 17GB still hasn't shown up, called 866 608 3007 to request a refund due to services not rendered. The first time I was transferred to a customer service line who could not hear me, so she hung up on me. The second time I was advised that they would not issue a refund but will disable autopay.
6/29: Did a chargeback through my credit card for both lines. Went to a Walmart store and refunded both phones. Filed a complaint with FCC for false advertising.
I admire everyone who in this thread who's still soldiering on against the sheer organizational incompetence that is AT&T Prepaid. But I simply ran out of time and patience to keep screwing around with AT&T.
edit: Forgot to mention that the reason I called 611 on 6/22 was because the phones weren't marked as "sold" by Walmart.com, so they had been deactivated. I had to forward the email receipts to [email protected] to prove that I had paid for both phones to get them reactivated. I guess in some parallel universe it makes sense to risk 10 years in a federal penitentiary to break into a Walmart.com warehouse and steal 2x $30 prepaid flip phones.
