Deal requires purchase of an AT&T PREPAID phone from either a Walmart store or from walmart.com. It does not have to be a smartphone. The Cingular Flip 2 also works.
If you have no intention of using the Walmart phone and want to swap to a different phone, verify the Walmart phone you buy has the same size SIM card as the phone you want to use (most use nanoSIM cards these days). To be safe, use the Walmart phone until your bonus data appears on your account.
Online activation does not give you an option to port your number. It will only give you a new number based on the zip code you enter during activation. Try calling customer service to activate if you wish to port your number over.
If you activated your phone with a new number and wish to port your old number over to it after the fact, read the warning below:
Warning about porting after activation: YMMV Several users are reporting that they aren't receiving the 17GB of bonus data after porting their number over and only receiving 8GB of bonus from the regular AT&T deal. Many are getting the runaround and being told to wait the entire 10 days to see if the full 17GB shows up. At least one user has so far and still hasn't received it. AT&T has escalated their case and they're waiting to hear back (https://slickdeals.net/forums/showpost.php?p=

This deal is valid until first week of September. Spoke with a ATT rep last night, she said this is a new deal and she will be following my account to see if I get 17 GB bonus or not because I changed the sim, phone and port in my number on the same day (7/3) I bought the prepaid cards. Still waiting for 17 GB bonus data to kick in

Only 8GB (regular promotion) was added to my account and I already returned the Walmart phone but man, an extra 9GB would've been nice.
6/11 bought Alcatel phone online and picked up at store
6/12 activated phone thru walmart link, got a new number (321 area code) and paid for first month (chose autopay and was charged $40 + tax). left sim on Alcatel phone.
6/17 8gb + 17gb bonus showed up on account, switched SIM from burner phone to iphone.
6/28 switched SIM back to burner phone, made some calls, then called ATT porting number, initiated port in from GV (407 area code), was told to call again after 48 hours to finish process
6/30 called again, an automated message said that porting should be complete on 7/01 at 10:59 am, so I hung up.
7/01 called again at 1400hrs, first CSR transferred me to ATT prepaid side, second CSR confirmed number was ready to port, went through the process. Rebooted burner phone and ported number is now there. I tried logging in to ATT account using old number, no go. Tried using ported number, created new password and pin, and 25gb is still there, with the same usage I had with the old number, same renewal date as well. 😁

Im glad your port in was successful and still shows the exact same info / data from your old number meaning they probably didnt close and create a new acct. It seems area codes 321 and 407 are in the same Florida market? My number was a california/pacific market and was porting into a Florida market so they had to create a new acct in my case.
What i may do is activate a new line under the california market so i wont have trouble porting in. When you activated the line, did you put in your current zip code hoping to get a 407 but instead got a 321 area code?

On a side note, I tried buying another Walmart prepaid phone but the employee said now they have to activate att prepaid phones in store before purchasing.

We then kept the SIM cards in the ATT phones and used the ATT prepaid phones. 5-6 days later, the bonus showed up!! However, the bonus is only shown in the ATT prepaid online account page. If I dial the short code to get account usage, it still only shows 8gb of regular data.
Is this normal? Could this be why many people think they didn't get the bonus data? That the bonus data only shows up on the ATT prepaid portal?
EDIT: one more thing I noticed. There is a mismatch between the bonus data period and the plan date, due to the 5 days it took to get the bonus data.
For example, my plan renews on Jun 25th, but the bonus data expires July 1. Kind of odd how that works.
I read your earlier post that you did your "number port in" to the new activated service in one single step at the ATT corporate store.
Do you know if the port-in would work IF the numbers are from ATT postpaid?
meaning it's an ATT postpaid port-in to ATT prepaid (25GB bonus) service?
Thanks!
NOTE: Also, were you able to find out the answer as to why "dialing the short code" act info returns only the 8GB bonus? Perhaps it takes longer for the phone-side of the system to update when compared to the ATT portal information?

I just posted my question about the 8gb bonus via short code...no answer yet.
