Not even close. The one you linked has terrible resolution 480 vs 2k...and the lcd seems to be 2.8in whereas the photon has a 5.5in lcd printing surface

I don't think anyone is arguing that a $250 setup is going to be top of the line. His point was that 480 is significantly less than 2k, and 2.8 is about half of 5.5in. You could have been helpful by providing sources to the workaround you mentioned but chose to just be pompous.

I'm a very technical person. I love the idea of 3D printers. I have seen some really cool setups on the internet. I have a few friends that bought into the 3D printing equipment. As much as I would enjoy playing with a 3D printer I have held off from doing so. I have seen some pretty nifty items printed out but I have never found a truely practical purpose for a 3D printer because of the space required, very stable surface required, and the cost of filament and eventual upgrades of equipment. The best use I have heard of is creating custom cookie cutters for bakers. RC hobby cars would be cool but the parts don't seem strong enough to handle the impacts. A super high end 3D printer in space would make sense I think. What other purposes do people have to own these other than the neato factor?

I use my FDM (filament roll and hotend) type 3d printers for all kinds of things. Making money on the side printing things for people. I design parts for work from time to time. I used it to make stuff for my wedding. Fix all kinds of things around the house, like door hinge shims. They are amazing and so useful in the right hands.

I bought a cheap Maker Select v2.1 a few years back and I've had a ton of fun iterating and improving it trying to achieve near-perfect prints on the hardware. One of the first things you end up doing is 3d printing parts to improve your 3d printer (braces, cases, etc). For example this is a remixed printer enclosure I made: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2730703 though Prusa has a more official looking one you can print now.

Outside of printing brackets, adapters, and replacement parts I have printed a lot of various things for table top board gaming such as minifigs, pieces, and storage containers. My latest project is building the Lowrider CNC which heavily uses 3d-printed parts in its design. I also am printing parts to upgrade to a Voron 3d-printer build in the future which also uses 3d-printed parts.

What you get out of 3d-printing depends on how much you want to tinker. If you buy one of the entry-level systems like the Maker Select or Ender you will find yourself debugging and learning more about the printer trying to hone things in. Though it looks like the Ender systems are way more robust than the i3 Wanhao platform the Maker Select was based on. Alternatively you can jump right up to a Prusa Mk3 and for more money have beautiful prints after unboxing.

I haven't played with SLA yet, but my brother has the Prusa version of one of these and they are pretty damn cool.. albeit with toxic resin chemicals so you have to handle them carefully.

This is more or less the normal price for this now that they've released the Photon S. I picked up this exact model from the official ANYCUBIC store in AliExpress for $210 in September.

Resin printers are very different than filament printers. They're messier, more toxic, require a lot of post processing equipment for rinsing and curing and are all around more expensive in every way. The slicing software and model files are also not nearly as plug and play. Do your research on resin printing before buying.

If you've never done 3d printing before I don't recommend starting with a resin type.

Steal at this price...matches the lowest price I have seen this at and the regular Photon is in the process of being discontinued even with quality issues with the newer Photon S model. Scoop these up while you can.

Youtube has been a great asset in getting set up to do this. Do the research, buy the appropiate supplies and you'll wind up with some pretty incredible quality in your prints. There is a learning curve when getting started and understanding supports placement, slicing software, etc. but nothing comes close to SLA other than resin casting for this kind of quality quality.

I have this Photon and an Elegoo Mars and have been thrilled with the quality in the prints of both products. I also had an MP (Monoprice) Mini SLA that was absolute garbage

I don't disagree that it's something you can learn. It's not rocket science, obviously, but it's comparatively much more work especially for the beginner and you need a washing setup, ISO, UV curing, filters, masks, gloves, etc. Sure, you can build all that for relatively cheap but it's extra stuff you don't have to do with a filament printer. Personally, I haven't found the detail quality on my 30mm miniatures to be much better than my Ender 3 Pro after fully tweaked and setup but then I get absolutely amazing quality from that printer.

Also, according to the ad on their site this will be $230 starting 11-11 on AliExpress direct from the manufacturer and that's not including the tons of coupons and cash back stuff you can get. Nothing against this printer, and I would buy it again, but it's easy to find a much better price. The only reason to buy THIS deal is you want it right now and from Amazon, which is not a bad reason as Amazon is pretty easy to deal with.

It sounds like I'm down on this printer, but I'm not, I just want people to understand what they're getting into before buying and to let everyone know this is an OK deal from Amazon but you can get it for about 20% less regularly.

I use it for prototyping different patent ideas I have. A lot of camera rig stuff and custom-made video game stuff. I also make models and both this and a standard 3 printer can advance that hobby fairly usually in quickly. The resin printers especially good at doing high detail tiny things like a set of chairs or street lights or a steel gate for your model. So between prototyping and hobbying, I think there's plenty of uses. I'm not trying to make plates heat off or anything like that however, people need also beware that resin 3D printer comes with a significant amount of extra pain in the ass that you need to be ready for it. The resin casts a very strong and pungent smell and you can't not use it enclosed indoor without some serious ventilation. It's also got a much longer process to get it from creation to use. I would say if this thing drops below $180, that's a good deal. Otherwise unless you need it I would just wait.

How much better is the elegoo Mars than the photon? Was thinking of pulling the trigger on the elegoo but they just announced the upgraded version is coming out at the end of this month so holding off for now

Significantly...the auto bed leveling feature is one of the best parts of the Mars as with new users one of the main reasons for failed prints are improper build plate leveling. There is a lot of scuttlebutt going on right now about regular Photons (Post-September production date) now coming with the more proprietary Photon S board inside it. The great thing about the original photon was that most of these SLA printers are/were VERY open source as far as replacement parts and customization.

Having the Photon S board in the new ones being sold means that sliced files that currently work with another photon would not work with these newer ones. It's really a step back for what these were intended for and what the SLA printing community is all about.

The real kick to the crotch here is that this was done by Anycubic without any transparency with their core consumer base. I actually pulled the trigger on another one of these at this price and learned of this after my purchase. It will be going right back if I got this now motherboard inside of mine. I guess I'll be waiting for a deal on a Mars now.

Buyer beware on these.
