The Troy Lee Designs A1 MIPS Bike Helmet is built for balance. It's poly-carbonate shell with EPS core bridges the gap between coverage and comfort for added protection when the trail gets steep and the triple fit support system keep this bucket locked in place, eyewear or not. - Discombobulated

Evo.com has the Troy Lee A1 on sale for about half off as part of their anniversary sale. Unfortunately, there is only one color choice, but all sizes are still available. Shipping is included, but tax varies by location

Former bicycle helmet product manager, and my take on it was always that age wasn't a determining factor, but use/abuse was. Most people don't treat their helmets that well and toss them around, leave them in hot cars, spray them with bug spray, drop them on the ground, etc. As a result, replacing a helmet after 5 years of use and abuse does make sense, but it's by no means a necessity.

As with all things safety-related, the most determining factor in staying safe (other than not crashing in the first place) is wearing a helmet, any helmet. A helmet that is 5 or 10 years old, or that doesn't get the very top safety rating, etc will provide *vastly* more protection than not wearing anything at all. The fine line between a successful CPSC impact test and a failure (assuming the helmet doesn't split wide open) can be only 5-10g (passing is under 300g, failure is 300g or higher). So a helmet that fails a CPSC impact test might register 305g (OMFG, UNSAFE!!!!) while one that passes might get ~295g.

And before anyone asks, I was a PM as MIPS was just starting to become adopted industry-wide. While the science makes claims that can be recreated in a lab, there are no real-world studies showing that it decreases the likelihood of head injuries. So take that for what it's worth. There are also alternative technologies like Wave Cell and whatever Specialized patented earlier this year. But otherwise ask me any questions you want!

Safety exports (aka Helmet manufacturers) state you should replace a bike helmet every five years due to sweat corrosion or immediately after should you suffer a hard crash.

I qualified for both so I am in for one. My prior helmet was Troy Lee so I am happy with the quality and protection offered.

Any recommendations for a super safe affordable street bike helmet? It looks like this one is designed specifically for Mountain bikes. I definitely need to upgrade from the helmet I currently have.

Thx in advance.

The site's been around for awhile and is fairly well known to sideways riding folks like myself. TLD is a reputable company. But don't take my word for it if you're interested in the helmet. Google them. Lots of folks around us wear their helmets and seem to like them.

What's the difference between this retail &130+ helmet and a cheaper $15 schwinn thrasher helmet at Amazon?
