Thank you for the quick reply. I have limited knowledge on RAM. Can you please let me know which MT/S, i need to buy?

THanks,

Wait what are you going to use this laptop for? Just so you know 2400, 2600, and 3200 MT/s is currently out there for ddr4. I reckon, this is a cheap laptop therefore just get the lowest ram speed of 2400 MT/s. Also as others has mentioned on this board, ram is much lower this year than last year!

Or just get single stick first and try it out which is what I did since I don't want to spend too much money on this laptop.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product...X0DER&th=1 ( and yes single stick defaults to the lowest settings of the oem ram but who cares!).

It is not bricked!! See my post here, it can be tricky due to S mode: https://slickdeals.net/f/13524451-costco-members-hp-14-laptop-i3-1005g1-4gb-ddr4-128gb-ssd-win-10-s-280-free-shipping?p=131725705#post131725705

You may also want to try to use the HP Support Assistant software to help the drivers, someone else had mentioned using that to make the driver installation easier.
Alright, I was able to download the HP driver .exe file and unpack it with 7zip and have the driver update it from the USB drive, finally! All the rest of the drivers were updated by AutoSearch for driver over the internet.

Hey that's my CostCo! I order mine online after confirming it in store. Guess worst case if i get a i3 i'll ask for a swap. Any luck with the 2.5 SSD upgrade?
I just got it and didn't even open the box to set it up. I will be looking out for RAM deals. Not sure I will touch the SSD yet but I would just swap out to 128GB with a 500GB or 1TB. I'm not going to mess with a 2.5 SSD addition.

There is only 1 HDMI output, but I don't see how it can drive an additional 4K display beyond that. You can use the Laptop Display (1080p) together with a 4K display.

So far, all report I have seen is USB-C ports are just USB-C, there are no display port stuff in there.

Hello,

I would like to add 8 GB RAM. Can anyone suggest which one should I buy and from where? I prefer Amazon?

How difficult to install the RAM ourselves?

Thanks,
If you just need 8GB you can pretty much get it everywhere online.

The spec you should remember you must have is
>>> DDR4 SODIMM 260-PIN <<<
then, some default memory (speed) to get is 2666 MT/s (current speed)

Optionally you can probably use 2400 MT/s and 3200 MT/s memory, but I think if you are asking for help, get the 2666 MT/s speed memory.

The memory speed supported by Intel is up to 3200MT/s, but they're new, rare, and expensive for the amount you buy, and it won't work at the fast speed unless you pull out the existing 4GB in your new laptop, because the existing ram is much slower.
And, we don't know for a fact whether HP has kindly enough to spec and engineered this low priced laptop to run 3200MT/s memory.

I have added one stick of this in my computer, and it works perfectly.
You might not need 20GB total, most average people will be fine with 4-8GB added

I purchased this below and put it in the laptop (In the original slot the 4GB was in), then I moved the 4GB to the second slot. Paid about $63+tax, sold by Amazon.

Crucial 16GB Single DDR4 2666 MT/s (PC4-21300) DR X8 SODIMM 260-Pin Memory - CT16G4SFD8266

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B071KP8CGJ/

You may not need 16 GB more, think about what you need, check your existing machine and see what the max memory is installed, that would generally suffice, unless you know you will need a lot more (if you are running an much much older machine).

You can try. Havent used Newegg in awhile, but tried and their website on phone is terrible now. Used to be no problem.
Not used to be newegg since already sold to other company. https://www.reddit.com/r/technology/comments/57gqmp/newegg_now_owned_by_chinese_company/

I prefer on selled by amazon or target or walmart.
Even walmart cust services are a lot better than Today newegg.

I just ran my second test with stock hardware. The only difference this time is that I have the HP apps killed and I changed the power performance to high performance.

Well... the results came worse this time. CPU on the first try was at 8068, now it's at 8020. Everything dropped except for the RAM that went form a 1532 to a 1594. The biggest setback was with the HD, it went from 3709 to 3072. My overall rating dropped from 2924 to 2847. Maybe the HP apps are there for a reason, fan noise or not.

Now I'm about to install more RAM and a new nvme HD. I'll run these tests again after that and see what happens.

What's crazy for me is that my 5 year old desktop (i7 4790k) still beats the new kids on the block with a 9711 cpu mark. Not bad for an old ma... chine?
I think whats really amazing is that this <4pound machine with screen/keyboard/battery. Can come close to ur old hunk of metal that is the desktop 4790k, not to mention the laptop cheaper at the time of purchase

OK I have used this laptop for few hours since yesterday. I gotta say the fan noise is a bit distracting. This is my first time using a cheap laptop and I just realized fans on the fancy machines make noise differently. This one seems odd. Sounds like a tiny whistle or something.

This looks like a better RAM configuration instead of removing the existing 4GB and replacing with 2 8GB. Adding 1 16GB gives you a total of 20GB and you get to keep the 4GB in the system and for about the same upgrade price.
