How do we check if it's g1 or g4? Also, do the colors seem off? Is the color tone adjustable? Thanks
The graphics are the last two digits of the CPU's model number. For this particular laptop the CPU ends with a G4. You can check the CPU model for this Laptop on the label affixed to the side of the box, or in Windows by going to Start menu > System.

I don't know how good the colors are for this laptop, or whether they're adjustable. I don't do much graphics work. It is quite a good display for this price point though- IPS with good viewing angles, not super bright but doesn't feel like it's totally lacking in brightness either.

I ditched the Windows entirely. First, it uses 30Gb of space and Ubuntu uses 5Gb. So I save a lot of space. Second, the Ubuntu 19.10 has a very little memory footprint so the idle Memory consumption is reduced.

Just to let you know, I haven't used Windows since 2013. Once they ditched Windows 7, I ditched them.
I'm having problems with Ubuntu recognizing my NVMe. I know you installed it on the original drive, but what were your changes (if any) in the BIOS to get it going?

Warranty Question: If I upgrade the RAM by taking out the given 4GB stick and inserting two 8GB sticks (like the ones shown in the description), will that void the Costco/manufacturer warranty?

Thanks.

Not if you don't break anything and keep the original to put back in before making a claim.

Look for news articles about the FTC and the warranty void stickers.

I do not agree with the wiki that Crucial's DDR4 3200 with CL 22 is a sweet spot.

The latency of
DDR4 3200 CL22 : 13.75ns
DDR4 2666 CL18 : 13.50ns

So the G-Skill one below for $50 is actually very slightly faster.

I ordered G-Skill DDR4 3000 CL16 for $68, and it's got even faster 10.67ns latency.
It seems this one is out of stock.

Crucial compatibility and reliability make it the sweet spot.

Got mine in the mail and played with it for 30 minutes and i am returning it. The fan is awfully loud for no reason and mouse pad feels like it's falling off.

The fan will settle after the OS is updated. The touchpad is the weakest link in this lappy in my opinion. But I think most are poor that are not glass. When macbooks used this style I would often have to "adjust" them.

I repasted it. I only got a few degrees of improvement. I've attached a picture of the heatsink with the original paste. You can see the dies were not even properly centered within the heatsink.

Didn't a few degrees make a huge difference in the fan running and shutting off?

i think the deal might be dead or dying in store. stopped by costco on the way home from work and tried to buy the laptop. they said 3 hours ago they discovered it was the wrong product and was an i5 and not an i3 like advertised and notified corporate. they had 46 in stock still.

i asked to speak to a manager and asked him if he would sell it to me since they still had the display one listed. i just said "if it was noticed 3 hours ago as a price or item mistake wouldn't you have taken the display and price tag away?" i wasn't pissed or anything, just asked and told him i was cool if he didn't want to sell it to me and he'd save me $300 haha. he gave it to me and removed the demo unit from the display. if i didn't get it i would have tried another costco tomorrow.

Manager is an idiot. Corp will tell him to put the dam things up for sale. They paid HP for i3's and got these because intel was short on i3's. 10nm production issues are wellllllll known.

It is a purchase. Just like a Free App on an iOS device you must be logged in to the store.

Yes you need to change the HDD setting to AHCI . But if you are dual booting then you need to do some pre steps in Windows first so that it can configure its setup to be able to boot in AHCI mode.
