If you're into music/sound production absolutely. Helps immensely to have high quality field recordings
Yeah, right? I can't believe they still sell DSLRs because I just use the camera in my phone.
I don't even go to the movies anymore because my phone has a screen too.
I actually run my whole media company entirely from apps on my phone
I also see the Tascam DR-05X is going for $90 - how's this compare to that?

These are good for weddings and stuff like that. I'd really only recommend buying a field recorder if you do audio/video work, or are involved with music

H4n is the best bang-for-the-buck option in my opinion. For what you're recording, try to get the microphone pretty close to the stage and at a decent height. Since this recorder has omnidirectional mics, you'll pick up a lot of background noise if you're not careful. I've only used the H1 with lav mics, so I can't really share any experience with it for your uses.. The H4n would be perfect for your use if you are able to save a little money. There are a ton of H4n recorders on the used market because of how popular they are. If buying used, make sure you're able to test everything before purchasing.
Thanks for the input! Sometimes I could get close (could probably put a recorder on a small stand in front at small church) but most times I figure I couldn't (think high school auditorium or gymnasium - so I'd be in the front row balcony, or back row).
I actually looked at H4N Pro, along with the DR-40 (and X) - weighing in the notion of the inputs they offer, and being able to record a safety track. But then I worry I'll never use the added features and that I am plunking down too much money for a toy to play with...like my dslr camera I barely lug around anymore.
I was leaning towards the DR-05X because it's $90, and I can get it through Google checkout for another $18 off. So for $72 it could be nice to get quality recordings of the kids activities. But again, if it doesn't fit what I'm trying to do - slick or not it's another gadget in the drawer.

Backup track is insanely useful. Xlr & 1/4 inputs are great as well. If you make friends with the person running the sound board, they might let you plug in an xlr cable
I'd like to give the recording to him as a surprise gift, but if the sound quality is going to be shit, or a mess due to crowd noise (may not be an issue since his band is a relatively unknown opener) I don't want to spend the money.
