Grabbed the cats and the laptop and that's all I had time for.

A huge fire broke out in the area where I live yesterday. I went to help a friend evacuate her horses and by the time I left her road the flames were wrapping around the windshield of my car. She took off cross-country on one of the horses, leading the other on a rope. I didn't find out until late last night that she made it out okay.
By the time I got home the back yard of the house across the street was on fire and the flames were about 100 feet in the air. I had about 3 minutes to grab the cats and evacuate. The smoke was so thick driving out that all I could see was the truck in front of me.
I holed up in a cheap motel that takes pets but doesn't have internet access. I had to go buy a litter box and litter and a dish for food. The cats were really freaked out in the car but did okay once we got in the room.
I spent the night thinking my house was probably gone but I dialed my number this morning and the answering machine picked up so it is still there for now. The area is still closed off and I don't expect to be allowed back in anytime soon. So far they are saying that 33 structures have burned.
I'm checking in from a McDonalds parking lot where they have wifi so I don't know when I will be able to post again. But, at least the cats and I are safe and so far we still have a home to eventually go back to. Of course that could change depending on the fire but so far it looks good. I feel bad for those who probably lost everything.
