The 718+ has same processor as 918+ (x64 (Celeron J3455) 1.5-2.3 Ghz). The DS418 has a aarch64 (Realtek 1296) 1.4Ghz.
718+ if you want trans-coding capability for Plex server. DS418 if you want solid 4 bay NAS.

The naming convention works like this;
XX###+
XX - Series (Disk Station = DS)
1st # - Maximum drives (they make expansion units to add 5 drives)
2/3rd # - Year
So the DS718+ is a 7 bay Disk Station released in 2018. Note, it has 2 slots and can be expanded to 7 with an accessory which is not included. The (+) indicates it has additional processor power for 4k transcoding or something else.
The DS418 is a 4 bay Disk Station released in 2018. It has 4 built in slots, but cannot be expanded beyond that. It also has a slower processor and would not be good for processor intensive things (like 4k transcoding).

What are you interested in? I got a J model on prime day, and while it was ok I wished I had something speedier, so upgraded to plus two weeks ago and it's way more useful.
I'm asking B&H about the differences in the plus and non plus models. Will report back.Edit: I'm thinking this is not expandable, the "+" has more ram, higher CPU, can be overclocked.
Edit 2: B&H stated the the + has an extra 1 year warranty.

I have no desire to stream media with a NAS - primarily looking to use it as DAS, with some occasional remote access or file sharing at home.
In that use case, is there an advantage to spending more?
