For gaming I would get a 7200rpm drive with a dedicated power supply (desktop drive not portable). Can you use this for gaming? Sure. Will it be slow? Yes.

As an aside, the USB thumbdrive filler linked is USB 2.0. If a couple of extra bucks is not going to break your wallet, there's a USB 3.0 version [staples.com] of the NXT Technologies as well. I personally went with this Lexar [staples.com] filler for $9. Figured if I'm going to get it and potentially use it, it should be as decent as can be for minimal increase in price. Seems like a small price to pay to go from 2.0 to 3.0.
