this is becoming an insanely good deal. it was a good deal at 399, better at 349. and now 299? it's one of those slickdeals i'm tempted to buy even though i dont need it!
I am sure if you wait even more till 2021 or better 2022 BF, there will be even better electronics. 😛
Review for the laptop [notebookcheck.net]

Seems to be 2 M.2 slots and 1 DDR4.

This thread is really the only source of info for this laptop on the internet, so that probably accounts for the views and posts.

Disappointed that you haven't been able to figure out the HDMI issues - luckily it works for my purposes, but I could see that being a deal breaker. Changing the HDMI settings/display timings didn't improve things?

I was quite interested in the Lenovo E495 myself, but it's too heavy for me...this laptop has probably spoiled me for future laptops in terms of weight. I'm not sure why the more mainstream manufacturers don't have anything equivalent for a reasonable price.
yeah, i am still working on the hdmi.

The other issue is that if i do 10 restarts in a row, i will definitely catch it in a state of incomplete restart where after it shows the restarting blue screen and then go to the black screen, it just hang after that and wouldn't go on to the bios boot screen. no problem ever with shutdown or sleep and awake from sleep. already turn off the fast startup thingy.

seems like no one else has these two problems and i've gone through 3 different m142. I am starting to think it could be related to some kind of driver issues? not sure what could be since i use the latest amd chipset and graphic drivers from amd itself.

I did a complete OS install so maybe missing some weird drivers or some settings somewhere?

My laptop is hitting 85c just from basic usage. I'm a bit concerned as that's hotter than my gaming laptop gets when gaming. I wonder if the temp readings in HWINFO64 are incorrect thought I read somewhere that AMD chips throw false readings.

The temp readings for me from hwinfo64 seem to be accurate. Is the fan running when it gets that hot? Are you in silent fan mode or basic? (Power led flashes if in silent mode).

Also, what do you mean by "basic usage"? Some web pages are pretty CPU intensive.

Chrome using youtube. Fans blasting. It runs avg 70-75 but spikes up to 85 every once and a while and quickly drops back down. Anyone know what the thermal limit of this AMD chip is? Does AMD put safety mechanisms on their chips like Intel? I know on my gaming laptop with Intel I7-9750 that its thermal limit is 100c and if It hits that the laptop will shut off to protect the CPU from damage.

The processor will throttle the cpu frequency if it approaches the thermal limits.

So I have been using my base $199 model about a week now with zero issues thus far. This is an absolutely fantastic laptop for Netflix, surfing the web, twitch, office work etc. can't believe how premium it feels and looks great with minimal bezel etc. As long as nothing goes wrong by 1/26 or whatever the return period is I am keeping it

Should upgrade the M141 memory to 16GB

Does upgrading the ram from 8GB to 16GB improve performance that much? Does it even make any difference in gaming, for example?

Also, has anyone experienced weird slowdowns that last a few seconds?

Sorry, repeated accidentally due to the sometimes finicky motile touchpad.

it's good so that you don't run out of memory causing crashes if you open a lot of windows. The performance improvement comes from the ability to run programs mostly or entirely within ram and not having to use the virtual memory which is based on the ssd.

I suppose that windows should be smart enough by now to minimize or not use any virtual memory unless absolutely needed. but then again you never know... if you have 16gb ram you can completely disable the virtual memory and know that you will unlikely run out of ram as well as ensure that windows will not try to use virtual memory inadvertently.

weird slowdowns maybe due to cpu being overwhelmed sometimes? also i supposed things could sometimes slow down momentarily if you are having to use virtual memory?

I guess it mostly happens when watching youtube videos. Sometimes the image freezes and the audio keeps playing and the image will start after 5 seconds or so. 4K videos run as well as 1080p, so it's probably not a bandwidth thing. I have no idea why it happens.

Edit: This is on firefox by the way.

start task manager and look at the performance tab. see if your cpu is maxed out at 100% when freeze happens.

first thing i did was upgrade the ram to 16gb as well as wlan to ax200. all done immediately the day i got the laptop in the mail. i ordered the parts from amazon the day i order the laptop.

I even order a 32gb sodimm and that worked fine on the motile. so you can even go to 32gb ram even if just one sodimm slot. but i decided that a little overkill so that 32gb is going into my lenovo p52 laptop ws

I installed the 16GB Timetec Hynix RAM that someone recommended and it's working fine. Ran a userbenchmark (all apps closed, basic mode) and everything is looking good, with the processor running in the 100th percentile. I don't know how good of a benchmark tool this is but it's good to know that the computer is running well for the specs.

https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/23349806

However, the RAM benchmark is in the 45th percentile (43.7) with a 176 nanosecond latency. Again, I have no idea if this is that bad, but can anyone try the benchmark tool with their 16gb chips? Or perhaps recommend a better tool?
