A basic explanation to compare studio monitors and speakers is that studio monitors are meant to deliver an accurate sound reproduction... which would seem like something you want... but not necessarily.
Some people like super heavy bass... more bass than the engineers original master recording provides. So a speaker designed with a bass heavy response might be better suited for a listener with those tastes.
Studio monitors are basically meant for engineers to 'monitor' sound and they want that sound to be accurately represented even if it means hearing stuff that sounds unpleasant. That's why they use monitors instead of normal speakers which may color the sound.
You can illustrate it with the use of salt on food. The chef provides a dish that he believes is perfectly flavor balanced. Do you want to stick with his rendition of the flavor or do you sprinkle some salt on it? Speakers sprinkle salt on the sound while monitors stick with the chefs rendition.
These are fine for gaming. I'm literally using them right now. Crystal clear sound, no obnoxious extra bass to distort what the developers intended me to hear.
These have good bass, clear sound.
I'm having a hard time picking between these and the 5" model. Desk real estate...

I have the 305 and it's quite big. Most people would need monitor stands for them. These are very large speakers and are heavy. Sound fantastic though.

Personally, I would get the 6.5" based on price. Because of their size, I would either hang them on the wall or use a riser that allows the space beneath it to be utilized.
From what I'm reading because they are ported in the rear they need to be off the wall at least a foot. I was looking at wall mounts but that would probably not work with these.

These are not very large and they are not very heavy. They are mostly plastic and rather light weight. I own 11 of the 5" and 3 of the 8" you maybe have a issue with the 8" on a desk.
