Don't be put off by the fact that this desktop is several years old, I use one as my main PC and I have another set up with
OpenMediaVault [openmediavault.org] (it idles at under 30 watts).
CPU benchmarks at 6730 [cpubenchmark.net] which is still respectable today. It has four DDR3 DRAM slots, and DDR3 memory is very inexpensive. Probably can get it up to 8GB for $10 on eBay. Add a cheap SSD and you've got a great desktop or HTPC. If you remove the DVD drive you can install a second hard drive in addition to the SSD. It has four internal SATA ports and four USB 3.0 ports in addition to several USB 2.0. It's capable of driving three monitors; two Displayport (up to 2560x1600) and one VGA, although one Displayport is internal, so it needs to be extended to use. Includes a Windows 7 Pro license, which can (still) be used to install Windows 10, which you can download
directly from Microsoft [microsoft.com].

ETA: you can get one from China for $5.00 [ebay.com], or from the US for $9.00 [ebay.com] (prices have apparently come down). I have no affiliation with those sellers.

I just got a 9020 for ~ $150
Biggest problem with this is no wifi, and USB adapters suck.
