I'm in the same boat (looking to upgrade my wife's iPhone SE), but VZ doesn't typically do much for existing customers when it comes to Apple products. Super frustrating.
I purchased a new iPhone XR at costco desk under this plan at that time. I got a refurbished iphone 6 for $120 at that time from amazon, traded in for $40 under this plan, got a line added to my friend's Tmobile group (5members), Paid a 2 months rental (only $10 as $25 was the monthly rental and I paid it from that $40 credit added towards my trade-in) until I got that prepaid master card for $710 ($750-$40). Once I got it, unlocked the phone and cancelled that T-mobile line.
That way, I got a new iphone XR for $90 at that time.
