I do my taxes online at their website but I get charged for when I submit. Is there a way to do this free software and then connect it to the online system so that it can pull my previous year's tax returns into it or vice versa?

I am confused. Did you get the free offer from Fidelity or is this unrelated?

I also only get $20 credit.
I could buy a CD with receipt, and get $20 credit to my account

That is not how it works. The link to get the free software is on a different page than the $20 off. To get the $20 discount, you just follow the link on that page and it gives you a discount when you buy it. But unless you want the online version, it's not nearly as good a deal as buying at Amazon or somewhere else that has deals posted here.

Most importantly, the free offer is not on the same page as the $20 discount. This is what I had posted in the previous years' threads, which I had created (I was away when the deal finally got posted this year so I did not create this thread):

To see if you have the offer, login to your Fidelity account and go to the Summary page if it's not your default (Accounts & Trade -> Portfolio). It would be on the bottom of that page.

Did you look on that page for the offer?

I do my taxes on their turbotax intuit website. After I finish entering everything and want to submit my taxes to the govt, it charges me.

I'm wondering if I can get the free Fidelity deal (for the downloadable software) and have it connect to their website to pull all my tax info from previous year. (e.g., are they connected or is the downloaded software a standalone with no connection to their online product?)

If you were to qualify for the Fidelity offer, you could just file on the website for free after clicking on the special link on the Fidelity site.

The downloadable software can use your previous year's fling info from the website (or just read the generated PDF) but I don't think you can download the current year's web return that you were working on and import it into the software.

There is a link online to save the .tax file for current year but don't recall if it was there before I paid or not. I used poor man version for my son so was free for fed+state.

How do you know what type of account you have? How do we convert it to get the free tax software?

When you login to the site, check the upper right hand corner. If have significant assets, it should say Private Client Group. It could also say Premier Services. It's generally not a matter of asking to convert, they will convert you if you hit the threshold for the level.

I'd login to get a screen shot but don't want to see the value of my account after the past couple of days.

I just checked - only got $20 off.

Had to go to this page (it wasn't on my main screen when I logged in):

Everyone gets the $20 off on that page (even those of us who got it for free). The free offer (if you got it) is on the Summary page (Accounts & Trade -> Portfolio), as I have posted.

There's nothing tax software-related on my Accounts & Trade -> Portfolio page - only a widget box that says:

"See our special discounts with tax providers. Get the most out of your tax preparation.

When it comes to tax season, every dollar counts. See our discounts to help your money go further.

Learn More"

When I click on Learn More, it takes me to the link I posted (https://www.fidelity.com/tax-info...n/overview) where it has the $20 discount.

There would be a box at the bottom of that page telling you that you can download Turbotax for free if you qualified.

What level customer are you? In general, Private Client Group customers ($1m in non-401(k) assets) get it. Some Premier Services customers ($250-500k in assets) have also gotten it if they are frequent traders. You do not get this deal just for having $100k in assets with Fidelity.

If you are familiar with the Bogleheads site, there is a thread there with lots more info.
