Rtings review of this TV: https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/sony/x900f

I purchased this TV November last year and was still able to price match my purchase due to the Best Buy Holiday extended return window (today was my last day to do this.) This TV has slightly better picture quality than the 2019 model (950g) due to better contrast ratio.

The 950 has a faster processor however. If you plan to exclusively use an external streaming device such as Apple TV 4k, Firestick, Roku ultra etc, then this doesn't matter.

How much is this true? I have heard that the X1 Ultimate chip and its capabilities makes a lot of difference even if you use an external device to feed the content (incl. apps, etc).

You'll only see real on screen differences with the two CPUs when you use the TVs operating system. Generally dedicated 4k streaming devices will be much better than any TVs OS based streaming apps, which are not updated nearly as often. When the TV is viewing content via one of its HDMI inputs, the performance you'll see on screen (the smoothness of navigating menus etc) will entirely be from your external device such as Roku, Apple TV etc.

950 also has wide viewing angle filter and brighter. The OS is also a bit smoother. It should be getting more updates from Sony as opposed to the 900. Just something to keep in mind if that's important to you.

The differences are mostly on paper and hard to notice, heres what RTings has to say:

The Sony X900F and the Sony X950G both have very similar performance. The X950G has lower input lag, which is good if you play video games or use the TV as a PC monitor. The X950G is brighter than the X900F, but the X900F has marginally higher native contrast ratio, although neither of these differences are noticeable under normal conditions.

Hmmm, really? I mean, for e.g. if I fed a 1080p signal say from my old DVD player, the TV will use its processing chip to upscale the content, right? And all the menu options in the TV to adjust picture quality is going to be using the TV's chip, right? i.e. PQ will be dependent on the TV's chip. Source also matters but it is a combination rather than the TV being used purely like a "monitor" rather than a intelligent processor + monitor.

Don't get me wrong, I have the 900E and would love me the 900F, but I ended up picking the 950G (even with its supposedly lower contrast, etc) due to the 900F being end of life with no more OS updates. I want to keep this unit for 7+ years at least.

The X1 chip in the 900f is more than adequate for any picture quality upscaling or signal processing needed. For example I have the Sony 800M2 Ultra HD blu-ray player paired with this TV, playing 4k Disc's which have Dolby Vision encoding, with a video bitrate approaching 100 Mbit/sec and it has been flawless. Again, the only thing the faster CPU in the 950g will benefit is the TV operating system. TV operating systems can be garbage IMO, you're better off using a dedicated streaming device which is built for the sole purpose of content streaming. To each their own though. The 950g is absolutely a great TV as well!

I know the 950g will continue to get updates vs the 900f will no longer get updates. Can/will these future updates improve/affect the ability to upscale contents?

Was planning on getting a 900F until heard about the problems it has with Dolby Vision. Probably will go with the 950G.

My 900f has zero problems with DV. DV is one of the main reasons I actually got this tv 🙂

They ALL have problems with Dolby Vision because it's a compatibility issue. Also, the screen isn't as bright when DV is active on apps. The 900f wasn't released with DV in the hardware. What it has is a firmware update that simulates it on apps, but won't run through USB and HDMI. This was fixed in the 950G and DV is built into the firmware.

With the latest firmware this is resolved. I have 4K Blu-ray's and the Apple TV 4K and DV content has never been an issue. Do you have the 900f TV with the most current firmware?

They changed the firmware in the 950G and improved the CPU. If you have a 900F and are using a streaming box with HDMI, it's switching over to HDR 10+. If you're watching Netflix, and apps like it, over the Internet, then you can use the simulated DV from the update.

So in other words you don't have this TV you're spending all this time commenting on, which I do indeed have. DV content looks stunning on this TV, but go ahead and tell me how its not based on what you read on the internet.
