Even if true, it will force prices down on both sides, finally.
I do not think so. Best example is of RTX 2060 Super and RX 5700 XT. They both are within 5-10% of GTX 1080, while the price is around 5% less then what GTX 1080 could be bought for 2 years ago. Personally from my experience AMD has never made a card that is as powerful with reliable drivers as Nvidia.
I recently returned RX 5700 XT and bought 2070 Super FE. I paid $60 more for Nvidia card, but I rarely have any crashes during my multiplayer sessions. This made me realize why Nvidia cards are expensive. Anyone can make powerful cards, but the software is a key and Nvidia does it best. Also, the design of their reference cards is also top notch.

Call me crazy, but I think some competition is somehow better than no competition when it comes to the advancement of innovation and the price of goods and services..
BTW, in 2012, the Radeon HD 7970 was arguably better than anything Nvidia had for a short time, and I can remember there were a few other earlier times. Also, your individual experience is not necessarily representative of what everyone will experience given the enormous variability of system integration and user experience that exist out there.
is this the cheapest one of these has gone for? Especially among the reference cards
No, I've seen some dip down to $950 before. And if you're not picky, you can catch like new one in Amazon warehouse with extra 20% off from time to time.

It's unfortunate what you had to go through and I basically skipped picking out a 5700XT and bought a 2070 Super also. But the other guy has a point. If AMD doesn't release a card with a similar performance, then everyone just continues to overpay for an Nvidia card. This is why the RTX didn't sell like gangbusters. They just added cards to the 10 series without passing on any value to the consumer or even the retailer. Nvidia only release RTX Supers with the 2070S and lower cards at lower prices WITHOUT even cutting prices on the regular RTX cards to force retailers to eat the burden of discounting/selling them against the new RTX Supers. Only the 2070S and lower cards got value passed to the consumer which were performance per dollar being finally lower after 3 years only because AMD released cards in that performance category. Had AMD not release the 5700XT, all cards 2070S and lower would be at least $50 higher in retail.
Mind you this version of the Asus Rog Strix 2080TI has the gimped Nvidia 300 chip which only has 280W power limit and can not be bios flashed to allow higher power limit. Thus it will throttle and won't boost as high as the cards with the 300A chip. It has an amazing cooler and I would buy this over the Evga Black and other non OC cards but still. If you waited this long you might as well wait for the RTX 3080, worst case scenario 2080TIs would get cheaper both new and used.
Here is a link to see which cards have the better, unlocked 300A chips and what the power limit is set to.

Great information. I have been considering this all morning and have been tempted, but I agree with your take that if you've waited this long, might as well wait a few more months. Both Big Navi from AMD and Ampere from Nvidia will be released this year. Who knows whether Big Navi will compete with the 2080 Ti, but Ampere will be objectively better - hopefully particularly in terms of power consumption.
This $1,000 2080 Ti will be worth maybe $600 in less than one year...of course assuming Nvidia prices the 3080 Ti like the 2080 Ti was priced and doesn't jack their flagship card up even higher...
