Metal at edge moves by design. Every tape is this way. It's so whether you hook around an edge or butt up against an edge it's an accurate read.
I'm sorry that my attempting to educate someone on a topic of simple tool design that they probably just hadn't been exposed to before offends you. That person was simply uninformed, you're being extremely obtuse.
If you go and Google "why is the end of a measuring tape loose" or some similar term, you'll get immediately hit with articles like this that back up my claim. https://www.thisoldhouse.com/idea...-it-wiggle
This is not BS. It should move by the thickness of the metal tab/hook, for the very reason explained by @ThatOneGuy.

In for 2! Cheap enough to have multiples around the house even though it looks like the crappy snap-ons i got a while ago (the black metal at the edge seem to move, making it inaccurate)

I cannot find if this is a class 1 or class 2 tape measure, but I did find the following labeling comparison helpful (see pic). The labeling is a little weird with every fifth inch shown in one large print number and the others in two smaller font numbers, and no incremental labels lower than one inch. I also read reviews saying the tang was short and does not grip well.

FYI, I picked up mine at lowes and it wasn't autolock.
I had the same thing happen. I went around the store and found that they did have the autolock on sale on a display. Maybe check back again. Their SKUs seem to be messed up.
