This jacket uses the reflective insulation. It is NOT as warm as expected. I don't know why Columbia doesn't use a rating system that uses their (no doubt) abundant data to rank their garments' warmth. I have bought 13 Columbia garments this year. (Had to replace everything.) I think Columbia uses the finest outer fabrics with some of the best workmanship in the business. As near as I can see, their garments (that use this reflective technology) ALL need more insulation to achieve the intended goal. This Voodoo Falls jacket is great for layering but (on its own) I won't trust it below 30 degrees. Especially if the wind is blowing. I have lived in ND my whole life. I have worked outside in it and played in it. I know a lot about cold weather. Columbia could learn a few things.
I also own the Eddie Bauer "Evertherm jacket. I've worn it in low 20 degree weather with short sleeves and I don't get cold. That one really surprised me. People say that jacket isn't warm either.
I guess what I'm saying is warmth is subjective. I'm not sure how they come up with ratings for jackets, but for me, they work. Maybe if I worked outside all day I'd feel different.
Realize that TurboDown is low quality down mixed with synthetic insulation. You'd be better off just choosing a synthetic for better water resistance, but it's a marketing ploy for those looking for down gear.
The Omniheat reflective junk is just a plastic film and is not in itself breathable at all. The way they make the jacket breathable is by leaving void space between Ominheat dots. You're basically trading down (the best insulator in nature) for wearing a plastic bag with holes in it. I highly recommend avoiding if this doesn't sound like what you are looking for.

I disagree. I own a couple of the jackets that use the Omni Heat (reflective insulation) and I don't have an issue with warmth. But I'm spending about 40-60 minutes in the Chicago weather conditions wearing mine. I don't know anything about North Dakota other than the capital. But walking in downtown Chicago by the lake puts the Omni Heat tech to the test.

I have a powder lite hooded jacket from them that has the technology and I was skeptical, but honestly for 20-30 degree weather that I have tested it in with some wind, it held up fine. I just had a tshirt and didn't feel cold at all, there was times when I was in the store and started to feel hot in it. Idk of all the differences there is between my jacket and this one, but I think people are right when they say it varies by people and also jackets since mine is different.

Bull$hit. Try actually moving about a lot. It creates sweat. Sweat is your enemy. Sure it might be some fancy plastic with lots breathability but it's million times better than a plastic bag. And some of us with different dna I guess, get hot real easy..
