Stocking up for Corona virus

940 257 March 1, 2020 at 10:57 AM in Chat
Hey guys,

Is anyone stocking up on "survival items" in fear of the Corona virus? So far I haven't, but I see a lot of the supermarkets empty from people like that here. Are the fears warranted, should I do the same?

I'm hearing hydroxychloroquine is at least a year away according to today's press conference. Still very encouraging.
It can be used now off label.

It's available now, yes. We don't know how effective it is for people with symptoms and some can't take it due to other health problems. It's the corona version of Zicam. Far from a vaccine but a step in the right direction.

Shelter in place, not exactly, can still go to grocery store

Target now limiting dry food to 8 per a customer. Empty shelves everywhere at my Target.

They had some grocery experts on TV they said the trouble is keeping items stocked, they don't expect a problem with food supply, and recommend nobody buy more than 7 days worth of food.

Nurse shortage and medical supplies shortage, that's something to worry about.
I am already seeing attenuation of all of this.

Walmart, Aldi, OSJL (job lot type place, local) and local grocers. Are the shelves "like normal" no, but you can get stuff, even TP. Yes alcohol, sanitizer, wipes, etc are all out, but as for food, you can get it. Aldi and OSJL had TP (pretty sad we are using TP as some sort of hysteria barometer, of all things!). Yes they had limits on purchase (2 packs), but I didn't see anyone in the store that even had one in their cart. What does that tell you? Hysteria creates hysteria; if you don't see something on the shelf and hear that it's impossible to find, next time you see it you buy a few extra *just because*, which actually exacerbates the issue. So now people subconsciously see the TP, think for a second to buy it, then say... I don't need it, it's here, I've seen it at a couple stores, I'll be fine. The same goes for everything else in the store, but I think we'll continue to see this on wipes and other sanitizers. Kind of reminds me of years ago when hot toys would come out ahead of Christmas and you'd hear rumors of a limited quantity being released at a certain store, etc. You'd buy the item just because it wasn't readily available even if you didn't need it (I'll admit I bought a few Wii's and TME even though I didn't have kids!); you could resell for a profit or worst case bring it back.

Did you see how Costco is refusing returns [yahoo.com] of high demand items like TP, lysol, etc? That tells me that they anticipate a rush of people that realize they didn't need to buy all this crap, and think they are going to return it, after hosing everyone else. Good for them - all you people that went out and bought the store out, you can shove all your purchases up your asses for all I care!

All this should bring down the hysteria levels quite a bit, which I actually think is the main acute driver of panic - OMG I can't buy food! Next will come the realization that the doomsday scenarios the media paints are inaccurate. Eventually the media will realize this and start to criticize others (but not themselves) for driving the panic. It'll be hilarious to watch.

And what drove that hysteria? The government.

"The government" sat with their thumbs up their asses and did nothing for months, exacerbating the inevitable crisis.

Multiple bottles of brand name disinfectant, soap, paper towels, and Kleenex, were on the shelf at one major store yesterday. Hopefully the hoarders have sunk themselves sufficiently into debt by now. Due to theft they now keep sanitizer behind the counter.

Supermarket said there's plenty of stock but they can't order more. The high demand left truckers unable to keep up with shipments. It's not a supply problem. It's greedy panicky people.

What did you expect them to do? They couldn't exactly step away from more important things like impeachment.

Go ahead and deflect. It's the executive branch that needs to lead this effort. Impeachment ended a while, you are reaching but you knew that already.

Reaching for what? The political undertones of everything being done at the federal and state level on both sides of the aisle of this crisis is disgusting. The response itself can be judged after it is over. Both sides feeling like they need to "win" this while it is still happening only hurts the progress that could be made.
