Bought one of these last week. Just got here today. Nice laptop. I'd say the cosmetic condition outside is more of a B than an A, but the screen is flawless so that's all that matters to me.
Says it has 6 months of warranty from HP on there, not sure how it works but that's nice to have.
Big upgrade from my 8470p. My 8470p is a workhorse but it was starting to have some issues. This thing is like a 1/4 as thick as the 8470p and has a HD touchscreen that's brighter. The backlit keyboard is nice too.

Seems like a good deal for the specs no?

It outperforms my 8470p which was performing fine since the i5-3340m is a great chip. I just upgraded because I'd had it for 4 years and I wanted something smaller with touch, backlighting, and a nicer screen. I paid $200 for my 8470p refurb 4 years ago so it served me well.

How easy is it to upgrade the ram?
I've been wanting a thin laptop with metal chasis and bought the Acer Swift 1 last month, but the N5000 cpu was just too slow, and the IPS screen wasn't good enough either, so I returned it.
As for this laptop, the best part is the screen, it's QHD and close to 100% SRGB gamut, which is far superior than most budget IPS panels. Mine still has about 1 year of warranty. The condition is perfectly acceptable for me, and I'll give it a A- or B+. I like that the keyboard has backlit, and the key response is better than a lot of others.

Replaced the RAM with a 8 gb stick for $30.
Added M.2 NVMe 256 GB for 40 bucks.
While this is no HP, I think this suffices for most users.
HP 1040 G3 EliteBook TOUCHSCREEN QHD / i5-6300u 2.4GHZ / 256GB / 8GB Windows 10
These laptops are complete, tested working and ready to use ! They are extremely fast, with a 180GB SSD, and come freshly restored with Windows 10 Professional 64 Bit. These are complete with AC adapter (charger) and working battery.

I don't think you can. Places I've read online say it's soldered on and the disassembly videos online don't show any RAM upgrades.
That's just not true. I've seen consumer versions of this type of laptop with similar specs for $500 new. Business models won't even come close to that. These were $2000 plus machines brand new.
That's not a bad deal, but a lot of us who get these business refurbs want a sturdier computer. Those cheaper models may have decent specs, but they don't have the build quality of business laptops or some of the security features.
Can confirm it is 256GB and that the 180 is a typo.
I have an elitebook 840, also G3. I really like it. The screen on the 1040 is better (the touchscreens on this model were 1440P) and the overall design is really pretty nice - long battery life, a decent processor for the time (I'm still using mine with the processor in this and it's pretty solid, at least in Linux), keyboard has a good feel, I'm not wild about touchpads but this one seems to be fine).
I really don't like that RAM is soldered to the board. My 840 definitely does not (I'm running 16GB), and HP says above that it is soldered onto the 1040.
All in all, if you aren't expecting to need more than 8GB, you should be good - apparently putting an 8GB in the open slot is not supported so 8GB might be the max 0 but for a general purpose browser and light apps machine with windows or linux, this is far better built than most more affordable machines. This is more like an LG gram or other $1000+ notebooks in terms of quality and battery life (apparently this model is claimed to have 10 hours - I probably got 8 out of my 840 regularly so could be)
Edit:
Sadly looks to have gone OOS.
