Wanting to find a new hobby during this time. Would this be a good starter to use?

Yes. You might need to do a little setup yourself, but that's just another skill to learn.

It might be okay but you'd likely do better by picking up a used instrument. There are some great deals available but of course any in-person meetup would be tricky. Or look on Reverb for used options on Epiphone or Squier. Great idea to start a new hobby (though I think you should choose bass instead!).

It would be fine for that purpose. Truth be told, the quality of entry level guitars has never been better. When I started playing back in 1992 (I think?), you couldn't touch a brand new guitar for this kind of money. I remember the old music catalogs (AMS, Music Emporium - this is before Musician's Friend came out) sold their cheapest instruments well above the $200 mark, and they were junk. Plywood bodies, atrocious hardware, just junk. A lot of the cheaper guitars today make good platforms for upgrading and modifying, if you ever get into that sort of thing.

For those just starting, I think you're better off buying a used Ep, Squier, etc. off FB marketplace or the like and spending the money saved on a local luthier to make sure it's set up correctly. Most local luthiers/music shops will teach you how to care for your instrument (intonation, action, string changes, tuning & the like), and a relationship with local businesses are important now more than ever.

Great advise for someone who's experienced player, but in many cases novice would not be able to pick used instrument without issues. Help from an advanced guitar enthusiast would be required here.

As my childhood guitar teacher told me over 50 years ago, guitar is very popular. If you want to join a band and get gigs, bass is a good option. This is good advice.

Yes right now all my guitar techs closed due to Covid 19 and are out of work. Take caution if u setup yourself and remember that you can only get action only "so low" before buzzing if the frets aren't level and that's most guitars off the shelf. Just be happy if u can get it to good enough for n ow! Good luck, guitar is a fun hobby and profession Smilie

Yea this is perfect. Sure its a cheap guitar, but honestly why spend a ton of money when you don't know if your going to stay with the hobby? Why also take the time to buy something used from a stranger in a market where you have no clue what you are looking for?

Make it easy on yourself and buy something like this with a small starter practice amp. Or one of the starter kits for like $250 that has everything. Take the guitar to a local music shop and ask for a set up ($30-50) and you are good to go/
