What's new with you since Covid 19?

7,092 3,609 March 21, 2020 at 11:47 PM
Just wondering what (besides the obvious) how everyone's been impacted. Work has all but halted for me, other than some online reselling that I do. Also, my stepdaughter will be moving in within a few weeks, since she's being laid off. It will actually give her a chance to make a career change and save for a house. We are planning a bigger garden, too.

So, what's new with you?

Not much is terribly different. I've been working from home for the last 1.5 weeks. The first two or three days were the worst, just adjusting to the situation. We've had to do take out from our favorite restaurants, but mostly I'm cooking at home, which isn't too much different. Seriously thought about making dirty rice (full of ground pork, chicken livers, onions, garlic, green onions, and parsley) yesterday, but Mrs. Frog was the one going into the grocery, not me. Might do that today, if I work up the motivation.

Other than trying to make fewer trips to the grocery store it has been business as usual for me. No option to work from home and no indication that my workplace will shut down anytime soon. That might come later based on what the economy does. Currently I am in the middle of my 9-day stretch off that I get every month so I have mostly stayed at home anyway.

There was some talk about staggering our crew start time at work so we wouldn't have 50-60 people gathering together at once at the start of the shift. Since I have been off since Tuesday morning I haven't heard if that happened yet or not.

I rarely eat out at restaurants so the shutdowns of those hasn't affected me at all. I already had a pretty good stock of toilet paper so I haven't needed to buy any of that. I don't buy much processed pre-packaged food of any kind so I haven't noticed if that kind of stuff is lacking in my local grocery stores, but fresh vegetables, meat, and eggs haven't been a problem to find.

For the short term I'm not concerned financially. I doubt my company will shut down for the virus unless it is ordered by the governor, and even then it could be exempted as essential industry, though that isn't certain. But even if I do end up off for a while I've put in quite a bit of effort to build up my emergency fund over a number of years and I do have enough to cover about 6 months of all of my expenses. And that would be without any unemployment benefits. Including that I am good for a while.

Long-term, this is probably going to hurt a little. If the economy is in bad shape for a long time I will likely miss out on up to $11/hour in profit sharing bonuses for the rest of the year and beyond. I'm feeling even better about passing on getting a new car last month and instead paying cash for my Outback at the end of my lease. So I have no debt other than my mortgage, which is a good feeling in rough times.

Probably the biggest thing on my mind is that my planned visit to see my dad in May is very much in doubt at this point. I usually only get to see him about once a year, and since his health isn't very good I know each time may be the last that I see him. My vacation schedule is locked in for the year and can't be changed. If May doesn't work I could still probably make a shorter trip there in September.

Went for a stress test 2 weeks ago... Doctor says he wants me to see a Cardio guy. May need a cath, stint, drugs or may be just panic. Anyway fortunate that Fla. is a better off as far as new Virus cases. Hoping the heat has something to do with it.Still think I may have had this thing in January. I actually sailed right thru it. Had a fever a day or two but that was about it. Have a whole house with everything i need to myself. Bought enough paint last week to repaint the whole interior. Absolutely ready to start that project.

Good luck with the cardio stuff. That can be pretty scary, and even more so with the virus stuff complicating the matter. I went through a lot of that several years back and fortunately it ended up not being a big deal. Some blood work triggered a stress test which triggered a heart cath. Lots of stress leading up to it but the results came back that I had absolutely no blockage. 40 some thousand dollars later. Only two $15 co-pays out of my pocket.

Knowing what I know now the whole thing was just the result of a poor diet, and that was the one thing they never even mentioned through the whole thing. No money for them in getting me to eat better.

I think I am in good health, have done cardio every day for nearly 20 years. I lost 100lbs in 03 and had some chest pains, so of course they did a cath , and found no blockage. Blood work has been good ever since , but this year my triglycerides were slightly elevated. Blood pressure is normal-high, and can spike. There are alot of things I could do to change that.Need to sleep better, and probably eat better.
Don't quite know what to think of my Doctor. When he saw me Tuesday to tell me my results, first thing he did was shake my hand, and he had a smile on his face. Some guy fat guy in the waiting room was coughing over everyone. So far so good though today.

I suspect Florida is doing minimal testing. And i suspect those thousands of Spring Break idiots brought down a shit-ton load of disease from New York and other places.

The locals was pretty much locked up most of the time they were here. And it was kind of a half aassed break crowd ,I bet there were fewer.I think the bigger concern is them spreading it out in the US as they return with a full blown infection.

Still think the heat is on Florida's side...

I work in the office of a construction company...I expect work to change a lot this week. Some job sites were closed last week, and I'm guessing many more will be closing this week. I'm in North Carolina, and some job sites might have hundreds of people working in fairly close proximity, so that's why I expect more projects to be paused. Our daughter it finishing up her freshman year in college; she'll be doing the rest of the semester online from home. She did her last two high school years at home, so it won't be too big of a change for her. But she already misses her friends after a two week extended spring break.

I've also had to pause my visits to Autumn's house to peep through her windows. Frown *

*nothing to do with the virus, just the ankle bracelet thing going off

Being home is normal. As far as all my neighbors being home in our small apt complex, ah it's been an adjustment. laugh out loud I was trying to buy a house and just started a lawsuit over an auto accident. My savings is tied up in that. All court matters have been indefinitely suspended. My rent was paid in advance thankfully.

Credit card bill has skyrocketed from having to buy things when and where I find them versus buying as needed and on sale. I've been through a series of life and death struggles health wise over the past several months so... I'm anxious. Currently hand sewing a face mask, learning to bake bread, and I cook a lot more.

My sex change surgery is postponed, my pole dancing classes are cancelled, and I have been limiting myself to 10 sheets of TP per a bowel movement.

I think you can actually smell roux in the air, there have been so many people making gumbo! All of the crawfish places are drive-thrus, so that's good.

Meat and veggies were getting slim here earlier last week, but i understand they've restocked. We don't eat processed food, but we do have a freezer full of meat and veggies. We also keep a stock of dried beans, rice, etc, because of living in a hurricane zone, so we definitely won't go hungry. I do hope you get to go see your dad. I went to my mom's a week ago Thursday. Glad i went when i did.

So glad for no car note and no mortgage! Lot to be said for working hard to pay things off or pay as you go.

It is a time of self sufficiency! It's always nice to learn new things and remind yourself that you can tend your own garden! nod

As I said in the other post, not much has changed at all for me. Chores need done every day, always, sick or not. Calving season, so it's normal to be several weeks in between trips to town (normal in general anyway). Neighbors are starting to have a little bit of a change, but it's basically changing to like it is in the summer. Everyone still has to work (not like town where many things can just "stop"), but with schools called off, they now have additional help with their chores. Those with crops will have more help prepping/planting. And more eyes to help with calving. (because, most farming/ranching here does not involve "immigrant workers", mostly families/neighbors on any operations I know of)

I went to town yesterday, figure I won't again for a couple months now. Looked like a typical Sunday. Tractor Supply type store had a dozen vehicles parked before 10am, typical as before. Grocery store, don't buy much there, but I looked. Maybe 7 vehicles. Pretty much everything in stock, they were low on potatoes and bread, but they had some, boss said more was coming. Not a concern because I have my own potatoes/squash, and bread is easy to make. Dollar General, the only place for shopping (no Walmart or anything, Shopko Hometown closed), maybe 5 vehicles. I didn't see that they were out of anything, including tp. Except for hand sanitizer.... Came home to the last 3 truckloads of hay that I bought being delivered. And then I had to pull a calf out in the pasture because I couldn't get a cow to cross some water from all the flooding since the blizzard.

The cattle auctions say they are going to continue, so that's good. Still don't like the pricing difference. Demand up, packers get more profit than before, everyone below them gets less because the packers won't pay it, but it's improved a little. Just wish the investigations into that would move along faster.
