I watch mostly sports. Does Plex Pass help my sports needs if I cancel SlingTV? Will I need the HDHomeRun box as well?
Also if I sync plex say on travel to a device is their security risk of exposing my personal photos to hackers?

With a Plex Pass, an antenna, and a tuner, you can stop paying for cable, and still enjoy great television. Watch, pause, and record your favorite free HD broadcast channels, including local news and sports, on any device, anywhere in the world. You can even skip commercials!

On a side note plex dvr worked great for me for about a year. I have run into some trouble which has made me consider switching to another media center.

Installing that way would likely be simpler to manage as well, though only you can prevent forest fires...err...only you know if you have what you need laying around to make that work.
For consistency, I'd, of course, recommend using Ethernet, at least between your FreeNAS and whatever machine (laptop, what have you) you choose to use for hosting Plex, to connect your Library to your media.
