Editor's Notes & Price Research

Yamaha's F335 gives you that classic dreadnought shape and sound at a price point that won't break your bank. The F335's tonewood combination includes a laminate spruce top, rosewood fingerboard and bridge, and meranti back and sides. Gold die-cast tuners provide smooth and accurate tuning while a tortoiseshell pickguard gives a bit more style. ~ persian_mafia

Another option around the same price range is the Epiphone DR-100. I teach guitar lessons full time and always recommend this guitar since it sounds the best and is the easiest to play out of all the entry level guitars under $150, IMO. In my experience, they have always come already set up with low action (strings close to the neck) which is the biggest factor in playability for beginners. You don't have to press as hard to get a good clear sound from the string. The neck is also a bit slimmer than other similarly priced guitars so that adds to the ease of playing too.

Whatever you choose, it's always a good idea to try out any prospective guitars in person at the store and find the one that feels most comfortable, especially for your fretting hand (left hand if you're playing a right-handed guitar).
This is definitely a good beginner guitar.

I'm a beginner as well, I went for a used Yamaha FG700s. Heard good things about Yamaha, check Facebook marketplace you might find someone who is moving or is no longer interested in the hobby

Alvarez RS26 NGB is also on todays musicanfriend deal for $100. Retail listed at $200.. but it doesnt have many reviews... any idea if this one would still be a better choice?

Overall Yamaha beginner guitars have a good reputation.

The other thought is maybe you want to get a nylon string rather than a steel string. A YouTube [youtu.be] on this choice.

Yamaha's entry guitars get fantastic reviews, but based on features alone these two guitar seem very similar. Laminated spruce top, dovetail, etc.

Man if there wasn't a better time to get back into playing than now. I grew up playing my Dad's 1967 Martin 000-18. I played a lot back in the 90s and early 2000s, haven't touched a guitar in over a decade but would like to play again and only have my 1996 Fender Strat with no amp. I'm seeing lots of good deals on Musician's Friend, thanks OP! Thumbs up and repped.

Yamaha makes pretty good sounding guitars for the price. A lot time better than most comparable brands. My son's first guitar was a Yamaha, he still plays it today. I just bought him a classical guitar by Yamaha l wish I saw this deal before I made the purchase. Just got it today. Anyway...it's a great starter guitar.

Man, that Alvarez is a classical guitar. Totally different instrument.

Also, this is a decent deal for a plinker. Keep in mind it's only 15-20 bucks off what most places retail it for. If you're looking for a steal this ain't it, although there is value in banging around with this guy if you don't have one to do that with.

Keep in mind it's a dreadnought. They're a bit large and not the most comfortable guitars for playing on the couch.

What's a good easier guitar type to start?

For the beginner it's only $109. You won't go wrong for that price. And MF is top notch handling any issues. Been buying thru them for many years.
