I have the 996 drill, love it, but prefer to buy this compact set, save the money to get a hole hawg or rotary hammer, both are more useful than a hammer drill. The compact drill in this set is good for 95%everyday tasks, lighter and more compact for extended uses.

Pretty good deal for this time of year.
For reference, around BF (for about a week) you could have gotten this set plus a free tool from Lowes for 230. Free tools included circular saw, angle grinder, project blower and I think a few other choices.
Given that BF is pretty far away, its still decent.

I second this. I have the 996 drill in the 887 impact, but 99% of the time I grab my 12 V Xtreme tools. The 996 is a beast, but the problem with that is it's a beast.

The atomic stuff is a great middleground as well. If I was going to own one set, this would be a great set to own.

There was also a deal where this kit was under $150 right after they announced the atomic kit. I think that was just someone panic selling thinking atomic was high end.

I have an older set of 12v Makitas (driver and impact) and the batteries are starting to die so I'm doing some research. I really like the size and weight of the Makitas and was looking at the 12v Dewalt line. Are these going to be much better performance for a homeowner / woodworker or could I be better served with the 12v Dewalts?

That is a good price for people that need a hammer drill. The 996B hammer drill is significantly larger and heavier. Faster charger is useless to most people with multiple batteries. 6Ah battery is too heavy/bulky for these tools. That giant battery is more for use on the leaf blower, circular saw, compressor, ect.

For vast majority of homeowner DIYers, the compact 791 and 1.5Ah battery is the better choice.

If you want one for Home use, consider the Atomic. They are 20v, brushless, compact, and out perform the 12v extreme. Here's some reference

820 Unit Watts Out
20v MAX XR DCD991 Drill
20v MAX XR DCD996/DCD997/DCD998 Hammer Drill

460 Unit Watts Out
20v MAX XR DCD791/DCD792 Compact Drill
20v MAX XR DCD796 Compact Hammer Drill

340 Unit Watts Out
20v MAX Atomic DCD708

300 Unit Watts Out
20v MAX Drill DCD771 (Brushed)

250 Unit Watts Out
12v MAX Extreme DCD701
