I have one of each they are virtually the same. These use the "normal" filters not the weird one. I bought this on amazon for the same price April 6 apparently.
Edit: It looks like the ability to wash the filter only extends its life by a small amount, but it has a more robust carbon filler that helps with odors.

The generic filters for 5300 is readily available, where the 5500-2 filter is $52 cheapest.
Dad came home from work one evening and said " I can tell a HUGE difference, the air is just, lighter"
This Winix will beat anything in this price range up to $300. I did a ton of research before buying this unit. We bought the Winix and the Veva air purifier at the same time (Almost the same cubit feet air cleaning) And the Winix completely destroys the Veva.
Otherwise, they are identical with cosmetic differences.
