Well it looks like a good deal. But I mean we could all speculate that it's due to the high amount of returns and some people weren't satisfied with a small center being used with the 580 or 590 towers.
I've heard others just getting the smaller or large Infinity center that went on sale and use auto correction on a receiver to accommodate it with the fronts. Many other speaker experts suggest not to do this though.
That said, if you've got the 530 bookshelves for your fronts, these should fit perfectly in.
I'd like to give you my personal experience, but I've never owned this center. But I might be about to, its a good price.

There were plenty of people here during the Holiday JBL / Infinity threads saying that they were buying multiple speakers just for comparison, knowing they going to return at least one.
JBL has the refurb 530's on sale now too for $280. Not as good of a 'discount' since they were on sale for $300 new before. https://www.jbl.com/earth-day-ref...le#start=1
Looking for a good 2.1 or 3.1 system. Was looking to get 3 kef Q150's but then these pop up with the center for a steal. Which is better for mostly Netflix/movie watching with a little music intertwined?
I'm betting these are NOT refurbs at all, just a way to "off" some of their stock. Either way, they have the same 5-year warranty as new.
I've bought a lot of refurbs from Harmon. Chances on the small items is very good they will arrive basically as new with -Z labels. If the discount on the 530's was bigger I would probably by a 2nd completely unnecessary pair, but $20 of the best new sale price is not enough. Center seems like a good buy, though.
The 590 towers, there have been reports of shipping damage to the feet, mostly. Those, my .02 is you have a decent chance of them really being refurbs. I still think they will be fine but they could arrive without all the factory packaging, if that matters to you. Function should be fine and appearance should be 99%.
The factory packaging for the towers is just not that great. My 580's shipped shrink wrapped and strapped to a pallet and the boxes were still heavily compromised. 590's would be even worse as they are quite a bit larger.

Ya, the 590's are SO heavy that shipping them in that mediocre packaging almost guarantees damaged feet! My new ones came damaged and I took the $200 credit that they offered and fixed them myself. Thanks 4 the feedback with your experiences with refurbs from JBL!
I should also say, I think these are great speakers and it will be a shame when the line is phased out. The new HDI line that was thought to be a replacement is priced very high, and the other lower JBL lines we have like the Arena/stage/lower studio lines can be OK for the money but are nothing special, just big box type speakers.
With all the changes at Harmon these fire sale prices on this JBL line and the Infinity Reference line could be a bit of a last hurrah of solid upper midrange performance at lower end pricing. They've really had very long runs and it seems nothing similar is coming.
I really hope I'm wrong but if you are on the fence for either lineup, better make your move sooner rather than later.
I own the 530's and 520c. Been running them with a Ultra THX rated receiver. Spacious, detailed sound. They will show off good recordings/movie soundtracks as well as really show the faults of streaming video with bad dolby digital encodes.
They are relatively low in sensitivity, so the money you save on the speakers needs to go to a better amplifier. I recommend something rated to 4 ohms with good output. I like the Denon 3600H for power and features if I was to upgrade. I think the 520c is a bit underated by some. I have been pleasantly surprised in the sound quality after seeing a range of negative comments. It is not as good as the 530 though, but honestly in a blind test, I think few would notice the difference. Ideally get 3 530's across the front if such things bother you.
It's a great price if you need this center, and a Harmon refurb on smaller items should be basically as-new condition.
I don't know if we've seen a lower price on it, it's definitely a good deal if you were looking for this center.
The complaints against the center is that it can't really keep up with the big 580 / 590 towers. It's fine with the 530's... and it's fine for prolly 90% of normal listeners. But if you've got a big space and are pushing 580 / 590's to what they are really capable of doing, the 520 can't keep up and you'll need push the crossover point up higher than it should be to save it.
The lineup really should have included a bigger center to go with the towers.
