It's not theft, it's the law:

"When an item is purchased on sale, is sales tax due on the original price or the reduced price of the item?
If the item is on sale at a reduced price, or with a store coupon issued by the seller, sales tax is charged on the reduced price.

If the reduced price is the result of a manufacturer's reimbursement, such as a manufacturer's coupon or rebate or any other third-party's reimbursement, then the sales tax is charged on the full price of the item without regard to the reimbursement to the seller."

But rules differ for each state:
"With any rule, there are certainly exceptions. For example, Texas treats "store" and "manufacturer" coupons in the same way. Following is an excerpt from Texas Rule 3.301:

"When coupons or certificates are accepted by retailers as a part of the selling price of any taxable item, the value of the coupon or certificate is excludable from the tax as a cash discount, regardless of whether the retailer is reimbursed for the amount represented by the coupon or certificate." "

Legal theft. Lol

Good to know. I haven't indeed seen the SE in person. I mean, I'm not a big fan of huge screens anyway...
If you're upgrading from the first SE or lower it's a dramatic jump up.

IMO, if you get a deal on it it's worth it. I wouldn't pay more than this deal for it. So depending on your situation get this or the Walmart/Target or Visible deal when/if you can.

Just bought the phone an hour ago. $100 (phone) + $40 (plan) + $15 (activation) + $10 (sim) + $10 (approx tax) = $175 (approx) Total paid. They didn't even ask me for any screen protector or cover. Just asked for the insurance once which I declined. Also, I ported the boost no. which I bought few hours ago from ebay. Thanks for posting the deal.. 👍

Did MetroPCS ask to verify your port-in number is active? How? By texting or calling it? TIA

Successful purchase at Corporate store in Houston.
Total was $263 = $200 phone + $15 activation + $30 plan + taxes
Will get $100 at end of 6 months.

Corporate store was a breeze, manager mentioned all the messed up term s & conditions were clarified. No upsell, they just asked if I wanted insurance, cases, etc and I said no.

I am on a Google Voice port, and that took some time. Rep had to call Tmobile port peeps and do a lot of talking about the number and that it was a Google Voice number.
As of an hour later, phone can make voice calls only, no text, no sms, no incoming calls.
They told me it would take several days for the port to complete, and the google port status says the same:

Status: Unlocked (Approved [1])
1. Warning: Google Voice has successfully approved your request, but the carrier to whom you are porting hasn't completed their necessary action. If you are still having issues and your number doesn't successfully port in 2-3 business days, please contact your new carrier for support, as Google Voice is unable to take any additional action.

Yes, she asked if it's active, I said yes. Then she tried to call on that number and it went to voicemail, so she again asked me are you not caring that phone, I said no. And she asked for the account# and Pin and ported it without any other question.

Went to the store for them to tell me the minimum plan is 50$ and ended up paying 275$. They mail you in a 100$ rebate after 6 month of use. But you can change the plan next month

May be I got lucky, the receipt says $300 store discount although the phone did receive a msg about something $200 rebate. Not sure how she did the transaction.

This went fairly smooth for me. One thing to mention. I told them that I wanted the $40 plan, since my son needs more than 2 gig data. There were two $40 plans. The one that gives you 10 gig and one that was unlimited data. That 10 gig plan can have up to 5 phones (with discounts for additional phones). The unlimited is for a single phone only. That was a good fit for me.

I was porting from Tello, which no one in Metro has heard of ... ever, it seems. That took a little bit of extra time, but it went through.
