Is there any real benefit to using a tongue scraper? The American Dental Association doesn't think so [mouthhealthy.org].
Quote :
Some say that cleaning your tongue helps keep your breath fresh, but there is no evidence that brushing or scraping your tongue will prevent bad breath or improve halitosis (chronic bad breath). In fact, bad breath bacteria can grow back just as fast as you remove it.

If you like the way your mouth feels after you clean your tongue, keep it up as part of your daily dental routine. It can be a great way to go the extra mile for your mouth, but comes down to personal preference and is not a necessary step.
Did you completely miss the first part of the ADA statement, or did you just choose to ignore it because it very clearly states that there's no proven benefit whatsoever to tongue scraping?

This peer reviewed study from 2005 says different...

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/16032940/

Quote :
The aims of this study were to assess the effect of tongue scraper among male adult patients with caries and periodontal disease, on Mutans streptococci (MS) and Lactobacilli (Lb) bacteria and secondly to assess the effect on self perceived oral malodour. All patients were advised to use a tongue scraper twice daily for at least 2 minutes per day for 7 days. No effort was made to change tooth brushing or dietary habits of patients. Self perceived oral malodour was reported by 41.7% at baseline and 30% after use of tongue scraper. Salivary count of Mutans Streptococci and Lactobacilli had significant decrease 3.37 (+/- 0.71) to 2.27 (+/- 0.80) and 3.22 (+/- 0.85) to 2.32 (+/- 0.87) respectively (P = 0.000). It was concluded that tongue scraping twice daily for 7 days had significant effect on MS and Lb bacteria and also decreased oral malodour
I bolded the relevant part. Self perception = placebo.
I colored the relevant parts in RED. This is more than just self-perceived. The self-perceived is just one part. No real study basis the findings on self-perception alone.

I can't argue with someone who either didn't read the study or didn't understand it. It's pretty clear to anyone who read more than the summary that it in no way demonstrated a objectively measurable change in bad breath, only perception (which, duh) and bacteria count. You're assuming a false equivalency.

How do you think the Salivary count was determined? By perception? What is your perception of your Mutans Streptococci and Lactobacilli count? How do you even perceive the difference?

As does this peer reviewed study from 2004..
https://aap.onlinelibrary.wiley.c...39.88-2003

Quote :
Results: The baseline measurements were compared with those of the end of each week using the Dunn method (α = 0.01). The tongue scraper showed a 75% reduction in VSCs, while the toothbrush only achieved a 45% reduction in VSCs.
So what? No one has argued that a scraper is as - or less - effective as a toothbrush, only that in most cases, it doesn't do anything to improve oral health. Which is why the ADA doesn't actively recommend it as part of a oral care routine (like brushing and flossing). The study's conclusions are valid, I'm sure, but there's no context as it pertains to oral health. Again, because scraping is a placebo for the overwhelming majority of people.

It was posted at the top of the wiki that there is no benefit from using a tongue scraper and was pointed to the ADA. I have added peer review studies that say otherwise. Use it or don't, but at least don't try and argue the lack of benefits.

The ADA website seems to overgeneralize and also lacks references to sources. The Mayo Clinic, on the other hand, is much less defeatist and more objective in their analysis.

Research on the effectiveness of tongue scrapers is limited. What's been published so far describes tongue scraping as temporarily effective for bad breath, but there's not enough evidence that using a tongue scraper helps with ongoing (chronic) halitosis.
However, if you have a coated tongue — a buildup of debris, bacteria and dead cells on your tongue — tongue scraping may be helpful. A coated tongue can be caused by smoking, dry mouth, poor oral hygiene, yeast infection or medication use.
I'd also like to add that dismissing any evidence that is contrary to your pre-established conclusion as "placebo" reeks of confirmation bias and sloppy research. Only around 30% of the population is susceptible to it and its prominence can vary tremendously depending on the context. Placebo effect is very pronounced in pain and pain relief but, for example, doesn't really play a prominent role, say, allergy meds (either you're sneezing or you're not). Similarly, its quite unlikely that you can bamboozle yourself or others with "placebo effect" into thinking that a foul odor is actually a pleasant one.
BO can actually be quantified by analyzing chemical content of your breath or your general odor but its tricky. (and there are different kinds, like the "old person" smell from various chemicals such as nonanal)

I purchased something similar to these last year from Amazon (for a lot more I might add) and I use them every day. I think they make a big difference in my oral hygiene. Not to gross anyone out but I'm amazed at the amount of gunk I scrape off of my tongue. It *has* to make a difference in my breath.
While the soft bristles on a toothbrush is good on teeth, it isn't as effective on a soft meaty surface like your tongue. Sure you can brush your tongue, but the purpose of a tongue scraper is to deeply scrape all the gunk off the surface. It's a single motion, and you'd be amazed by how much can come off. Brushing the tongue is more time consuming, and may be uncomfortable and gag inducing. I've started tongue scraping a few years ago, and it's honestly become a part of my routine. Not to mention, this makes a great and inexpensive gift 👌

It looks like there's 2 types on there. I'm sure they are essentially the same but does anyone have any experience to know if one is actually better than the other?

I have one similar but smaller. I love it. Using this on your tongue over a brush is way better. Cleans your tongue and helps with bad breath.

I use one of those Colgate 360 toothbrushes. I like the tongue/cheek scraper on the back of the head.

Why is this crap even on SD? Just use your toothbrush.
I've had to use a tongue scrapper for years. Toothbrush isn't effective.
