In my case the other choice is Comcast and they are much worse than AT&T.
Does anyone know if we cancel the AT&T service, do we have to return the gift card funds?
Seriously looking into going back to Spectrum, it's either that or I go spend 200+ on my own mesh system behind the AT&T gateway.
Anyway the reason for my reply is to share my experience with ATT fiber for the last 2+ years. had 300 Mbps for a year on $40/mo and renewed with gigabit for same $40/mo including equipment ($50 - $10 for bundling service with cell phone), and I've had no complaints.
I have tested their gateway wifi a couple of times and get 400 Mpbs while in good range, I dont think any single access point would be good enough for a large area. I personally run UniFi APs (3) one on each floor and disabled wifi on the att gateway so I get decent coverage from most areas of the house.
If you can, buy a good mesh system to spread out the coverage, especially If wired gets you the promised speeds (I get 950 Mbps+ up/down almost consistently). I can understand why you are frustrated as they now force you to pay $10/mo for their not-optional device, but I would just consider that $10 as part of the monthly fee when comparing service. I have no use for such devices.

For those paying the modem fee, just call AT&T. After I placed the order and was all hooked up, I called the next day and they removed the modem fee. You might not be able to get anywhere with the first person you talk to so ask to speak to their customer loyalty or customer retention department. It is those people that have more power to make changes to your account.
