Its a 2 piece rubber seal. One piece covers the earbud, then another piece that goes over top of that. Dont listen to these people who dont own them, and have never seen them.

For $30 theyre fine, I needed a pair that wouldnt fall out while I bike/run/mow the lawn. These fit the bill, those hideous looking loops do their job, they hold the bud in.

They also sound fine, at least compared to my other 2 pair of $20-30 amazon chinese buds. Like most everyone else,I listen to podcasts or compressed mp3 music while wearing these.

First of all, I guess refurbished usually doesn't mean used, second, they usually replace the tips which is the only part that touches the ear canal and third, they would thoroughly clean it for sure.
Irrespective of that, I wouldn't buy these because of its size and lots of negative reviews, not because of they are being refurbished.

Make sure you assemble both rubber pieces onto each earbud. I tried them without both rubber pieces assembled and they sounded horrible. Sound was much better once they were assembled correctly and fit tightly into the ear canal.
