It's called fluoroelastomer and yes it's more durable that silicone that you find in the cheap bands. They both look great for about the first week, then the cheap ones lose their coating and start to look shiny like a jelly bean. Meanwhile I still have bands from the original Apple Watch 5 years ago that look like new.
Material and quality is definitely better from Apple. I wouldn't say it's drastic or extreme but I'm happy to buy Apple brand when they drop below $30. Just got one last month for $25 via Amazon (only had one color at that price though). I've had problems with the connector parts of 3rd party bands in the past too so maybe I'm a bit biased.

Amazon has price-matched some of them. Mainly the sport loops.

For those "who don't like 3rd party bands and want the real deal", does it have anything to do with the material/quality of the 3rd party bands? Leather and machined metal I can understand, but as far as sport loops and nylon bands go, I can't imagine the quality being that drastically different to pay 4x or more than the normal 3rd party cost.

Are the Nike sport loop bands worth the premium? I picked up a Series 4 on a Walmart clearance deal last September and am thinking the Nike sport loop bands might breath better over the summer months, but have read they aren't worth the price.

Yes, there actually is a difference. It doesn't take one long to realize it after they have the Apple Sport band and buy a few cheap ones on Amazon. I bought 5 for the price of one Apple band, but the material wears faster, you'll see discoloration and lint and dust stick much more.

So it depends if that kinda stuff bothers you or not.

The quality is actually better, particularly with the "rubber" straps, which aren't even rubber when they come from Apple. It's some other rubber like material.

Third party bands, in my experience, tend to fray or fade or have their pigment rub off. My girl friend's Amazon chinesium sport band is barely a year old and already faded and yellowed. On the metal ones, the coatings come off fairly quickly from standard wear.

I have a Nike sport band from Apple that's almost 4 years old now and it still looks as good as the day I bought it with daily use, except that the coating on the stud has polished itself off from where it rests on my desk all day.

For many people third party is probably okay, if you're the type to mix and match or swap out every so often. The quality of the third party bands can vary wildly and there are some third party band designs that Apple simply has no duplicate of. I think it's worth the cost because with Apple, you know you're getting quality that will last. If you're okay with buying a new style every 6-8 months based on aesthetics alone, there's nothing wrong with third party.

I to agree. I didn't see much difference in Quality but generic bands connectors are not reliable.
