Good laptop but non-HD screen is a deal killer It's ridiculous to use non-HD screens at these times.

You can turn that off though.

One of my biggest tech regrets was getting a 768p laptop for schoolwork -- word processing, research, collaborative work, etc. is cramped and lousy (especially on a 15"). Anything less than 1080p is simply not worth it in my opinion.

It is HD but not Full HD. It is higher than 720p. The deal breaker is windows S, if you are only using it for internet browsing it's fine. But you cannot download any program from outside of Microsoft store.
You can always opt out of windows s in the settings. If you do a little bit of googling there are some tutorials out there.

'768' kills the deal. I wonder why they still produce screens like that? About 100 PPI? Really? Hello its 2020

Coz some people are fools and don't know nothing about tech. Like Apple fanbois. 2 cores $900 deal, let's buy it coz it's Apple.

This one, $300, let's buy it, must be a deal.

I would be cool if a budget laptop comes with NO ram but 2 free sodimm slots . Would prefer that to even 8GB of soldiered ram...lol...

Say NO! to anything lower than 1080p! that should def be the lowest standard res nowaday.
Quote from JackieG3204 :
That screen should be illegal to produce anymore.
Quote from didi52 :
Cannot believe on earth PC with less than 1080P resolution still exists!
Quote from SlickCrowd6832 :
I agree. A good screen is key... And the screen kills this deal.
Quote from munkymonkjr :
Even at $300, there is no excuse for a 768 screen. Imagine taking the pixels in an iPhone - and then stretching it to 15". While it's not half bad at 5" -- at 15" its an instant deal killer.

SD never fails to disappoint with the Resolution Nazis coming out in full force on any laptop thread. They keep on making this screen res because people keep on buying them and are HAPPY with the res!! Nothing wrong with HD laptops (especially at $300!). I personally use a mix of HD and FHD laptops and both work fine for me. I am guessing i am not alone since manufacturers keep on pumping HD screens out and people are still snapping them up!

All my laptops have always been 720p so I don't think I'd be bothered by it. I'd really like one thats 1080p but I don't want to pay over $300. Seems like so many people pay for expensive laptops, good cheap ones are rare.

You're not looking for a 300$ laptop then, good day
Yep, SD wants 4K screens at a $300 price point!!

Nobody is asking for 4k at this price, nor on a laptop at all really, but 1080 should be a minimum. I've had a 768 laptop in the past and it was quite a terrible usage experience. While 15' is big enough to have 2 side by side windows, this resolution makes that less than useful.

There is DEFINITELY a webcam on the motile. It's actually a webcam with IR that works in total darkness so you can use your face to sign into windows even in pitch black room.

Thanks for the tip on this! I got up a little early and managed to snag one. Should be a nice upgrade from my 2012 Lenovo with a 3rd gen i3.

Quick question - is the SSD reasonably fast or should I consider replacing it? Thanks!

Why do you lie... people like myself talked about 1080P screens... I would have paid and extra $25 for it, maybe even $40 for it. The cost difference is probably like $10 - $15 to produce. With such a small difference in price to produce you wonder why all screens are not 1080P... food for though.

If all you are going to do is search the web... I would recommend 1080P. But if you plan on using microsoft word, excel, try to do productive apps there is a big difference in 1080P.

So when you mention 4K, you are twisting the truth.

Yes the SSD is very fast... night and day from a old school harddrive and only slightly slower (not worth your investment) then other alternatives.

But, can you upgrade the RAM or Harddrive with this model? 256GB may not be enough for some people, especially if you keep this laptop for 8+ years.

We have two laptops in our home... i7 and i5 3rd generation (7 years old). I have upgraded both with 1TB SSD by Samsung, installed a very clean OS (no bloat ware) and they both run very well. I don't know when I will need to upgrade.. maybe in 3 years from now? My brother has the same i7 as me and he purchased a new Lenovo i7 Yoga this past year (he is an engineer and uses demanding apps).

And... you got a i3 3rd gen... lasted 7 years, you probably never upgraded the harddrive. I always felt that you should get at least a i5 or better and I still believe this regardless of how much faster the new i3's are. So 7 years ago I got my i5 (with a 1080P screen) 6GB of RAM from Dell scratch and dent, the price was $450 and ordered it, (I think this trick may still work) one hour after I ordered the machine I called up to cancel and they offered my $50 off if I keep the order, I said yes. When I received the laptop, I called up stating that the dent was WAY big and wanted to return it, they offered me $50 to keep the laptop, I said yes.

Would this be sufficient to run google sketchup?
I would run a second monitor so the resolution isn't the worst thing.

Actually, I replaced the Lenovo's HDD with an ADATA SU630 SSD about a year ago and did a clean install of Windows 10. While the SSD is faster than the HDD by a very good margin, it's the processor that is slowing things down due to all of the multitasking for work (an ungodly amount of browser windows, Skype, MS Office apps all running simultaneously). Full disclosure, I also upgraded the ram from 8 GB to 16 GB at the same time as the SSD swap.

Interesting story about your purchase with Dell, sounds like you came up huge on that. I was curious about the Motile when it first came out, so I'm pretty good with giving it a try. Wound up just a tick over $300 thanks to CA sales tax, but that's still low enough to add extra RAM and potentially replace the 256 GB SSD for something larger/faster if need be.

Thanks for the insight!

Personally, right now I am a huge AMD fan boy (I have AMD stock). And my next laptop will definitely be AMD. But I find their prices are to high right now. I don't mind spending $800 on a laptop if it is the right one.

Good Luck and I am happy you did those upgrades. I also upgraded my RAM about one year ago.

I also built a gaming system 12 years ago which is going strong today. The CPU is a Q6600 (overclocked at 3Ghz), 8GB of RAM, Abit IP Pro 35 Mobo, I upgraded the harddrive to a SSD and upgraded the GPU to a R9 X270 five years ago (from craigslist). I don't really play games (but it can on low settings), the truth is I hardly turn it on... but when I do it works! and works well. It also has Windows 10 Pro. (Food for thought)
