Exactly where they should have cut back, along with cutting down on the unnecessary number of cameras trend, which is the only other major change. Just like Google understands with the Pixels, the latest greatest SoCs are simply overpriced overkill for almost everyone other than heavy mobile gamers. Great design choices by LG here in designing a cheaper model of the G7 and it looks like a great deal at this price though perhaps looking for a good deal on a V35/40 may be a better choice if you can afford a bit more.
It even still has the 32 bit hifi quad DAC/amp built into the headphone jack that makes the LG V and G series so charming compared to the vulgar openly anticonsumer market manipulation tactics by Samsung, Apple and others who remove the obviously useful headphone jack entirely from $1000+ devices (in Samsung's case even their 10"+ highend tablets, wtf?) for no actual coherent reason other than pure greed and forcing their customers to shell out hundreds more for crazily overpriced mediocrities like airpods and galaxy buds.
Important to note that this carries a Snapdragon 821, not the Snapdragon 835 that most flagship phones in Q1 2017 came out with. This kind of puts it at an operating capacity between 2016 and 2017 for flagship phones (only when looking at the CPU).
Meanwhile a used LG G7 (2018 LG flagship) carries the Snapdragon 845, if you don't care about used vs new phones for around the same price.
I just did it.
Used unlocked att v40 for 110 bucks (it has a cracked back) on eBay.
Extended battery case for 40 bucks on Amazon.
Boom. $150 flagship with a fantastic camera, quad dac and a battery that now lasts 2 days with heavy use.

I have head guys/ gals here in slickdeals keep talking about getting a used LG V40 for less than 2 bills from ebay and swappa.
How true is that? and what would be the condition? what should one look out for when hunting for one?

my retired friend Grumpy is looking for one. Any help would be appreciated.
Loved my LG-G6 with the Snap 821 but the battery life was terrible. This G7 Fit has the 821 with an even smaller battery so I'm assuming battery life is even worse????

The time your screen is on and the brightness setting has more to do with battery life than the cpu.

After trading phones to upgrade my mom to a Pixel 3a, I'm using her 1.5 year old original Pixel XL with the same SD 821 cpu. I'm waiting on the 4a or OP Z, myself.
It's still a good phone, but dang does it get warm and even as the XL model the battery life just isn't long enough. Of course, this is an older unit/battery than this new LG, but the CPU's inefficiency, heat output, and what I perceive as heat-throttling (similar to the same age SD 652), really is frustrating. I totally agree that you don't need the latest or top cpu, but in this case getting something like the SD835 due to the notable improvement with efficiency and heat management would be well worth it.

Yep great deals to be had, I am thinking of getting a v40 myself. But a V50 for $360 is also a good deal https://slickdeals.net/share/android_app/fp/570965 too bad VoLTE and WiFi calling don't work out of the box with T-Mobile.

This is better than the previous Front Page deal for $149 with no sim cards!
