I was actually refering to the netgear extender which is pretty meh from my experience
As for your SSID question, it will generate the same SSID with a EXT at the end to identify you are on the extender. If you choose you can modify it though. This will work just as well as one of the netgear ones, but not as good as one of the mesh netgear ones.

Not necessarily. For under $100 you could get a A6/A7 and a RE305 extender, both of which support TP-Link OneMesh. It's not $50, but feels close, especially if you get them refurb from TP-Link it's about $70 total (when they are in stock).
C8 is newer, has usb 3 and also beam-forming. If you have amazon prime a7 should be $45, but I would go with c8
