depends, what are you looking for in a printer? and if you can live without fax, copy, even scan, you can find better devices in lesser price. And if these features are desired , I do not see better product + price at this moment.

Canon mf642cdw from BB has a 3 year warranty. That may be a better deal, unless you want a fax. That one is $269.99. The canon refurbished comes with one year warranty for $229 similar to this one. Refurbished comes with a standard toner instead of a starter kit. Reviews between HP and Canon are very similar everywhere.

What about the most important question- Does it have good generic toner options (with hopefully the drum built into the toner cartridge) that you can easily replace it with once the starter runs out? This is assuming that this is even an option since I've heard that HP has started locking down some of their printers with firmware updates that prevent you from doing that which is insane. The long term costs need to be factored in before any decisions.

Hopefully some owners will chime in...


Edit: From amazon Q&A:

- If a color cartridge runs out of ink can you still continue to prints black and white?

Answer: If you run out of one toner, the printer may not print. The printer needs some toner in each cartridge to print.

Answer:It can only handle double-sided automatic printing. This printer cannot do duplex scanning or copying. I would recommend looking at the Color LaserJet Pro MFP M479fdw printer for duplex scanning and copying.

I can't speak about this particular model, but I have an HP Color LaserJet M277dw that I got for $100 from an ex-coworker and I absolutely love it. It prints great and the toner lasts a long time. Best of all, it's compatible w/ 3rd party toners, so I can change them all out for less than $40.

I do have more connectivity issues than I did w/ my monochrome Brother laser printer, and I do miss being able to cloud print, but HP offers ways around that (emailing the printer for example).

The toner on my HP Officejet Pro 8710 runs out over time without printing anything.

It literally evaporates.

Do the Laserjets do this? Might be worth it although I'll have to give up duplex scanning with this.

one is inkjet, the other is laser. Not at all comparable

Research the cost of color toner cartridges for this printer before purchasing it. With HP, they tend to run out pretty quickly, and replacing them all at the same time will cost more than what you paid for the printer to begin with. It's a marketing trick to offer the printer at a lower cost, then recoup the loss through replacement toner cartridges. HP has been doing this for a long time now.
