I know lots of Costco fans hate on other warehouse stores, but when we were maintaining both Sam's Club and Costco memberships last year we basically stopped going to Costco. Nothing beats the ability scan and pay with an app, skip the lines and have the door check people just scan a barcode on my phone!
I am primarily a BJ's shopper since it's on my way home, has a gas station and I have their 5% CC.
Then I got a Sam's membership because it was basically free - but it's about 30 min drive (same town where the IL's live).
There is a new Costco not on my way home but maybe 15 min out of the way..... thinking about getting a membership to check out what is different but not sure if it's worth it....
Doesn't help that they (WM) culled a ton of Sam's locations a few years back. I think there are only 2 left in CT - probably the more convenient one to me was closed.

Too easy to make a mistake.
You've got to go to a local store to activate .... that's when they'll enter your DL.
If you've had a Membership within 18 months, you're done .... your 30$ cash card just evaporated, gone, bai-bai.
..... the Associate won't even know to tell you, since you're using a Certificate to open this new membership ..... the ups folks (whoever's is running the 30$ CC programme) will know you're not New, and not ship your card.
I may be entirely incorrect, but that's how I would set it if I were in your shoes.
Going a step farther, could 3x family members rotate annually?
(ie: 1 yr "on" as primary, then 24 months "off".. 24 > 18)

they used to not care about complementary members but they've recently changed that.
