according to the u.s. embassy in japan [usembassy.gov], currently only U.S. citizens with student or resident visas are allowed entry. i guess you can take a bit of a gamble that things will be different by winter/spring 2021. japan is definitely intent on doing the olympics next year so it's not totally unreasonable.

Yes: https://jp.usembassy.gov/covid-19-information/
At some point, airlines will have to offer longer-term flexible policies like free refunds if they want people to travel again. At this point, they aren't even officially even giving people vouchers if they aren't able to legally enter the country they're flying to.

There have been a few flight deals I've been very tempted to jump on, but e.g. I'm not going to buy a ~$250 flight to Rome if Americans aren't currently allowed to enter, in the hopes that we are by the time the flight happens. TAP had a policy that offered an expirable voucher if you were flying through the end of this month. Even for that, I'm not going to lock money into a foreign airline. There can be so many issues along the way: I test positive, or I can legally enter but nothing is open, I get a voucher but can't use it before it expires, or can't use it for any reasonably-priced flights, etc.

Might be a good deal, but IMO. Avoid American and United.

Main part of the trip is via ANA, which has excellent service.

right now there is. it remains to been if it'll still be in effect by the new year - hopefully virus will be much quelled and/or vaccinations abound.

Yep, always enjoyed flying with ANA. Japanese service is top notch. I was supposed to fly with ANA to Australia in October, sadly it was canceled. ANA refunded money smoothly without those voucher bullshit.

I haven't been flying since covid, but isn't it the airlines' responsibility to ensure you're eligible to enter whatever country or face fines and fees?

You might actually be able to score a global upgrade from an elite and actually have it clear since no one is flying.

Service is great, but has anyone else noticed that a large majority of the NH fleet lack air vents? OG NH 787s are still the best though - can't beat using the lavs with windows!

I had to cancel the trip back in March and Cheapoar charged me $70 I think for it. Now I wonder if I do that with Kayak, will they charge me too, if the travel is still banned?
