At some point, airlines will have to offer longer-term flexible policies like free refunds if they want people to travel again. At this point, they aren't even officially even giving people vouchers if they aren't able to legally enter the country they're flying to.
There have been a few flight deals I've been very tempted to jump on, but e.g. I'm not going to buy a ~$250 flight to Rome if Americans aren't currently allowed to enter, in the hopes that we are by the time the flight happens. TAP had a policy that offered an expirable voucher if you were flying through the end of this month. Even for that, I'm not going to lock money into a foreign airline. There can be so many issues along the way: I test positive, or I can legally enter but nothing is open, I get a voucher but can't use it before it expires, or can't use it for any reasonably-priced flights, etc.

Yep, always enjoyed flying with ANA. Japanese service is top notch. I was supposed to fly with ANA to Australia in October, sadly it was canceled. ANA refunded money smoothly without those voucher bullshit.
