Ooh, I bought Costco's HERO8 bundle [costco.com] a couple weeks ago for $290. A few days later I learned about the HERO9. (This was sort of an impulse buy, not well researched.)

If the HERO9 was $400+ by itself like predicted, it's easier to say no it's not worth the difference. If a similar bundle is $400 including the year of subscription, it's more tempting to return the 8 and upgrade to the 9.

*The Costco bundle includes a case which the HERO9 bundle doesn't, but that's not a dealbreaker.

The front screen is nice, and 20mp photos are a big plus... and "30% more battery life" answers my biggest complaint after a week with the HERO8.
I bought the Costco deal last week too. Took it back today and ordered the 9. Reviews point toward the 9 being one of the most significant upgrades.

Any reason for a better deal during Black Friday that could creep up for the Hero 9?

Looks like the price is the same for the trade up as well when you add the subscription to the cart https://gopro.com/en/us/shop/tradeup
Meaning trade up stacks with this deal price or is the same ?

I've tried purchasing several times now. I purposefully don't log into my GoPro PLUS account because then I don't get the year of PLUS for free. but I use the same email for the PLUS subscription.

Every time I purchase it just takes me back to home page. Been charged on my card three times but no email confirmations! Maybe a glitch? Anybody else having issues?
Same happened to me after I ordered this morning. After receiving order confirmation on only one order, and notification that it was shipped, my credit card showed a refund on all 3 charges and a charge for the correct amount - so all good at the end.

I didn't do any continuous recording tests, but I was disappointed in the battery life of the HERO8. I hear it's only good for about an hour [digitalcameraworld.com] of 4K video.

Yes, I just tested it, without a battery at all, plugged in via USB to an external battery. It recorded a short video just fine, with a "NO BATT" warning on the screen. In fact, I saw a tutorial video recently for shooting an overnight time lapse, and step 1 was plugging it into an external power source (in that case, even via extension cord into the house). Nice to know the battery isn't actually needed (for long, static shots where you can plug in).

The HERO8 battery is 1,220 mAh. The HERO9 battery is 1,720mAh. A recent deal on a USB battery pack was 20,000 mAh, or enough to charge the new battery over 10x.

I like the GoPro dual charger [gopro.com] so at the end of the day you can charge two batteries separate from your camera.. and it's easy to plug it into a battery pack in your backpack and charge a dead one while you're shooting with the other. I don't know how long it takes to recharge, so conceivably you could still run out of batteries if you had two and were doing nonstop shooting. But extra batteries are only $14 with your GoPro subscription.

For me, the biggest problem is if you're out surfing/diving or something for over an hour. You can't change batteries or do an external power pack there on/in the water.

What would be REALLY cool is if it had wireless charging, and there was a waterproof battery pack that supported that.

In fact, I'm surprised this Camera Media Mod [gopro.com] doesn't include a USB passthrough for charging.
I don't disagree that these would be cool features, but outside of phones I really have not seen a lot of wireless charging capabilities. Even my iPhone XR/SE2020 is spotty with wireless and even worse with USB based battery packs that supposedly do wireless charging.

Now, in terms of diving, unless you are using a rebreather you are likely not going to be underwater for a long enough period to fully discharge the battery. I am not certified for rebreathers and I just quickly swap out the battery on my Hero5 while swapping out tanks.

Sure, it's an added step in the process.. but it takes like 30 seconds to take off the case and replace the battery - ignoring the pre-clean and maybe a little more if you are splashing it with a water bottle with fresh water and drying it first.

From what I have seen it should support it.... but keep your camera off and just talk. I hate when someone has their camera on since no one wants to see your house or expressions.

Just talk strait and come up with solutions - or sales pitches if that's your thing..

Does GoPro always charge a ridiculous amount of sales tax? It seems like they are charging the sales tax on the pre-discount price, which is 449.99 (camera) + 49.99 (subscription).

EDIT: I guess the answer is yes, based on a search in the forum. https://community.gopro.com/t5/fo...=sales+tax

Good deal but the sales tax issue is a major turn-off and deal breaker. It just seems greedy to me, since they technically can send just the sales tax on the discounted price to local government and keep the difference.
That's illegal to pocket tax when it says tax. Bring it to gopro attention. They will have to fix the tax to reflect after discount. It's illegal to prove the tax wrong. Newegg had an issue too. Admin fixed it asap and refunded the difference.

I'll be returning my 8 to Costco, too. I bet they're getting a ton of that. They're going to have to put that bundle [costco.com] on sale again (and bigger) if they want anyone to buy it now.

What does Costco do with returned merch, anyway? Sell it used (open box) through other channels?
Costco, being Costco, requires the manufacturer to take the item back. The manufacturer then gets to handle what to do with it.
