I had two hero 7 blacks go "bad" on me and was engaged in a 1.5 year fight with them over replacements on and off, only to find out that two out of three Samsung memory cards I bought off of Amazon as FP slick deals were fakes, and actually what caused my cameras to freeze, crash, fail to give me clear files at random. I felt like an idiot. I was so sure it was GoPro's fault.

Amazon gave me refunds for the cards even tho one was over a year old and I threw them in the trash.

Next memory cards I buy will be directly from Best Buy via price matching to Amazon.

That seems to be the best/safest solution.

Just adding two comments.

First, if you are already a gopro subscriber, they give you an additional discount on the camera. I am not, so I couldn't see what the discount actually was.

When you check out, they break out the subscription cost (49.99) separately from the bundle cost and ask you to acknowledge it. At first, I was confused and thought they were adding this to the total cost, but when I checked out, it wasn't added. I did have to pay tax, and 2-day shipping was free.

Glad they brought back the replaceable lens cover. That's the only thing i don't like about the Hero 8.

I include $100 of accessories that I bought for 50 or less. Got amazing deal on gopro last year with AMEX Offer, etc. I sold that and accessories for literally more than I had paid. LOL
I also sold my gopro hero 8 that i got with amex offer last yr. But I am slightly disappointed in the hero 9. A lot of the new feature like horizon lock on the hero 9 was available in app on the hero 8. Hero 8 also got 4k30 hypersmooth boost from gopro labs. I was hoping it had less cropping but it looks the same? From side to side comparison on youtube, the 5k footage didn't look that different from 4k on the hero 8. I think i need to see the original file and not the compressed one on youtube. The max lens attachment is limited to 2.7k only.

I think I actually prefer the max with the reframed upscale 4k, 360, spatial audio. I wish the hero mode 1440p can be upscaled but at least it has max superview + max hypersmooth and these footages can be combined with the reframed footages. One annoying con is the limited software so 3rd party free software needs to be used. Personally i think the footages are better than insta360 360 module. However the max footage is darker than hero 8 footages.

They charged me separately for the subscription $350 plus tax plus $55 for the subscription. Anyone else had the same problem?
Oh no. It seems I ordered the bundle and they have separated out the subscription as an added line item...

No additional discount for current GoPro Plus subscriber. Once you login in during checkout they remove the subscription and change the price of the camera from $300 to $350.

This sucks for us who are already subscribed but hey I'll just hold on to my Hero 8 for now.

Did you try to delete the account you have and checkout then?

That would risk loosing all my content uploaded to GoPro, so no. Also I already paid for the year, renewal 5/2021.

Completely understand, I've only had it for 1 year so I can download my content and re-upload.

Is there a camera like a GoPro that does better with farther focal distances? I am a casual vacation photos/videos kind of guy, trying to avoid some $4,000 DSLR rabbit hole just to get a clear shot of the Grand Canyon! I like wide FOV, but I also want super sharp crispness, I want to see the leaf and the pebble off in the distance.

Older Galaxy smartphones (S6, S8) ironically used to do better, but the latest 2 generations (S10, S20) are very sharp for close-ups (people, small objects), but landscapes just don't come out with clarity, and distant nature just becomes a soft green blur.

Everyone who's having problems: existing subscribers need to be logged in to see the $100 discount on the Hero9 ($350).

The $100 discount on the Hero9 and Max is listed explicitly on GoPro's website.

You need to be logged in.

This screenshot was taken on an account with a new 1-yr subscription after ordering the Hero9.

Opinions on whether to get this or Insta360 One?
I bought a Hero9 for the GPS gauges, but my vote would be Insta360 One R Twin Edition.

Way more software features, especially AI. And Insta360 doesn't nickel and dime you for bullshit. Their mic adapter is $10, and the One R natively supports Airpods.

Is bundle worth extra 50 bucks?
Someone mentioned it was cheaper get the items individually if you have a Plus subscription. If you check out with the Plus subscription is in your cart, it counts as having a Plus subscription.

GoPro is an action camera, built for up-close.

It sounds like you want something with optical zoom (which could be significantly less costly than an SLR + telephoto lenses), but then you said you want wide FOV? With a wide angle, even if the camera can focus sharply on the leaves in the distance, they're still going to be tiny. So I'm not sure what you want actually exists.

For "superzoom" vacations shots, I wonder how something like the Canon SX620 [bestbuy.com] would do.

For reference, I'm a passionate hobbyist photographer. I have a Canon 6D SLR along with a bunch of lenses. My phone is a Galaxy S9, and my HERO 9 is on the way.

How much video can be captured on the included 32GB memory card at 4k? or even 5k? I assume these are the most used settings, but I could be wrong. This will be my first GP and have no point of reference.

Will you run out of battery before the card is filled? or will I need a second battery to fill up a 32gb card?
