I had two hero 7 blacks go "bad" on me and was engaged in a 1.5 year fight with them over replacements on and off, only to find out that two out of three Samsung memory cards I bought off of Amazon as FP slick deals were fakes, and actually what caused my cameras to freeze, crash, fail to give me clear files at random. I felt like an idiot. I was so sure it was GoPro's fault.

Amazon gave me refunds for the cards even tho one was over a year old and I threw them in the trash.

Next memory cards I buy will be directly from Best Buy via price matching to Amazon.

That seems to be the best/safest solution.

Just adding two comments.

First, if you are already a gopro subscriber, they give you an additional discount on the camera. I am not, so I couldn't see what the discount actually was.

When you check out, they break out the subscription cost (49.99) separately from the bundle cost and ask you to acknowledge it. At first, I was confused and thought they were adding this to the total cost, but when I checked out, it wasn't added. I did have to pay tax, and 2-day shipping was free.

Glad they brought back the replaceable lens cover. That's the only thing i don't like about the Hero 8.

I'm absolutely going to be getting a bigger memory card, too. Probably 128gb.

Speaking of that, how big a difference is there between the SanDisk Extreme and Extreme Plus? Both are recommended by GoPro [gopro.com] and both support 90 MB/s write speeds. Only a slight difference in read speeds (160 vs 170). BestBuy only carries the Extreme Plus, apparently.

SanDisk - Extreme PLUS 128GB microSDXC UHS-I Memory Card - $67.99 at BestBuy [bestbuy.com] (actually, the 256gb is on sale for $64.99 [bestbuy.com])

SanDisk 128GB Extreme microSDXC UHS-I Memory Card with Adapter - C10, U3, V30, 4K, A2, Micro SD - SDSQXA1-128G-GN6MA - $22.99 at Amazon [amazon.com]

What a rip. Just get the Samsung Evo Plus/Select. 128GB for $20.

Big difference in performance, fail rates are way higher with Samsung memory cards.

Is the subscription worth it?
For me it is, unlimited upload of your media content (Vid & Pic) including non GoPro content in full resolution. Depending on how active you are you can rack up 1TB easily, for $49/year it's a steal. Besides if you plan on getting a GoPro and eventually accessories the ease of auto backup, device coverage and discounts cannot be overlooked.
I would say try it before committing.

I've had an 128GB Evo in my Viofo dashcam recording at 22~26 Mb/s for the last 3 years. I drive ~200 hours/yr, so it has written > 6TB and has yet to fail.

If you're concerned about failures, buy 3 Samsung microSDs for the price of one SanDisk.

By the way, Samsung NAND is one of the best regarded in the industry (along with Intel and SK Hynix). From their SSDs to their RAM and their SD cards.

That doesn't help if the card fails and you've lost your epic vacation videos.

Unlike a dashcam, a GoPro is checked frequently and SD card issues will throw an error.

NAND failures present as inability to write, data can still be read. This is true for both SSDs and SD cards. So when there is a failure, which is extremely rare for Samsung, you'll only lose that moment. The rest of the saved videos are fine, and can still be offloaded.

These 'high end' hyper-reliable SD cards are snake oil, much like Monster audio cables. Even if its better, does the difference actually matter if mainstream cards from reliable manufacturers like Samsung have reliability that exceeds your lifespan?

No third party tech reviewer has ever measured SD card endurance. Unlike for SSDs: https://techreport.com/review/279...-all-dead/

I'm still salty over my Karma drone and them not supporting it after less than a year after launch.
I'm still salty over my hero 5 always seeming to have weird issues where it doesn't record. Also am still salty at when they recently released a firmware update for it and their support could not tell me what the update changes. There was also no release notes online. I still decline the update because I don't want to brick my device (as was reported by other hero 5 owners).

I've had cards from all of the major manufacturers fail on me. Samsung has been hands down the best manufacturer for warranty. The only thing they ever asked me for was a picture of the card with the serial number, and within 24hrs of me sending it, a new card was on its way. Lexar is by far the worst. They demanded I return the card for inspection before I could get a replacement. No f-ing way am I sending an SD card filled with my photos and videos for someone to inspect. It took weeks of cajoling before they relented and allowed me to send them proof I had destroyed the card before they sent a replacement. From them on I've mostly bought Samsung cards and never Lexar.

How much storage (GBs) do all of the GoPro enthusiasts run on your set up?

It was an update to support the blue Hero8 batteries, nothing more.

The change is written plainly on their website. Its just that GoPro documentation gets buried under mountains of blog spam and reposts.

128 GB. Transferring a short 20GB is excruciatingly slow, even at 60 MB/s. Also, storage is limited on phones/laptop SSDs.

128 or 256 is fine unless you go for a long time without offloading.
