It was very easy to see an option for those that don't have a .EDU address; it's clearly stated right on the site in the post's link: "No .edu email? No problem.
Click here to learn how you can still qualify. Offer terms apply." That link takes you to an option that uses the promo code "non_edu_promocode", which worked fine for me. Perhaps "Fundamentals of Reading Web Pages" should be a mandatory course.

Just a note that I had to add exceptions to my ad- and tracking-blockers to get through the "onboarding" process and to go through the cancellation ordeal.

The site is clearly designed to be misleading in a lot of ways (four steps to cancel, each of which makes you think you're making a terrible, irreversible mistake). As many others have stated (thanks!), you can "cancel", and you'll still receive your free year. I'd recommend that everyone do this immediately. They're clearly planning to make a lot of money off students who forget and will be charged $180 in a year.

I canceled right after signing up will continue to have access for one year.

Also, this is from their TOS: "You may cancel a Recurring Subscription at any time, but if you cancel your subscription before the end of the current subscription period, we will not refund any subscription fees already paid to us. Following any cancellation, however, you will continue to have access to the service through the end of your current subscription period.

Anyone else having declines using privacy.com cards?

Nevermind. Old funding source expired.

Thanks to OP for posting this. I was really really curious about Masterclass and had several that I was interested in (Thomas Keller, Chris Voss, Annie Leibovitz) but was dragging my feet due to the upfront cost. I am already enjoying this and went through several videos of other instructors. Although I cancelled immediately in order to turn this into a risk-free $1 trial for myself, I might actually re-up this next year if there's more new content uploaded that's equal to what's already here, and, due to the covid situation if my luck should hold, I still have a job this time next year.

Is this where you provide your card number and whenever you buy something online, it provides some type of anonymized card that links back to the real number?

I clicked on the offer, verified my .edu email address and somehow managed to get charged $180! WTF? Can't even find a help line to get in touch with them! Any help would be thoroughly appreciated!

Email [email protected]. The same thing happened to me. The screen confirmed a $1 charge before I ordered but I was charged the full price. I tried calling (855) 981-8208‬ but it says agents aren't available. Waiting for a reply, otherwise I'll dispute the charge.
I accidentally did the same thing, I emailed them and said that I had verified the edu email and the promo code did not apply, within a few hours they emailed me back saying they had applied a $179 credit to my card (only charged $1 after the $179 credit).

I got a receipt for $180 but no charge to my card (according to Apple Pay). Thanks! I've really been wanting to check a few of these out.
I got this from my Apple Pay, too and it's causing me a lot of anxiety. The app showed $180 charged (pending maybe?) and the email receipt showed $180 as well. I emailed them at [email protected] to see if it was a mistake or I didn't qualify (even though I used my verified .edu email). Otherwise I can get a refund within 30 days. https://masterclasshelp.zendesk.c...-a-refund-

FYI, as you sign up it'll make you select 6 people to add to your class list. You CAN'T REMOVE THEM yourself and need to contact support.

So, uh, don't just click yes on the first 6 people.

how stupid

Same thing happened to me. If your receipt showps 180 you were charged 180. I emailed them and they quickly refunded me and told me to sign up again. The second time I copied the promo code, deleted it and pasted it in. Once I clicked apply and it showed I got the discount I completed the order. The receipt showed $1 the second time.
