The iphone 7 (at&t prepaid) has a similar deal, has anyone tried it to see if it also has essentially the double discount? If so, it would be cheaper than the SE and might work well for a trade in.

So if you're a postpaid customer, just popping in the SIM for 6 months should work to unlock it?
No. AT&T doesn't like when people buy cheaper prepaid phones over their more expensive postpaid phones. The prepaid rules still apply. You need to have an active prepaid plan for 6 months in order to unlock.

Do they check to see if sim was in the phone for all 6 months (like cricket does) or are they more lenient?

Even though this phone feels like a downgrade (small 4.7" screen and bad battery life) from my current phone, I thought this was such a great deal that I went to walmart at 7am. Brick said it was limited available which usually means NONE but it was worth a try. I noticed that there weren't any blue prepaid at&t boxes but the employee came out with the regular white box. He scanned it but the deal wasn't showing up. They only had the postpaid iphone SE so the deal didn't work. Manager said the SKU is different.... Oh well. I tried.

Again like I said, my question is if it needs to be activated and constantly be in the phone needing the unlock

Everyone including at&t is strict nowadays. It isn't like the good old days with at&t. That is from my experience. Prepaid is even more strict than postpaid because they sell phones much cheaper and have cheaper monthly plans. The good news is that prepaid is still compatible with redpocket and others..... I am a redpocket user.
