Did you activate and sign up for autopay? It's not a YMMV. It's a...you need to do these steps.

I went yesterday night, the OSL people weren't at a store 12 miles away, so had to go today morning 11AM. No go, rang as $149 + $75 for the autopay for first month.

With Auto Pay, yes. I was at the step where he asked me to swipe my card. I passed at that point

He said $249 + $50. Asked for my email and some other personal information to set up my account. Then asked to swipe my card, and I asked what's the total

If you never swiped your card you'd never see the discount. The system can't discount until it knows you signed up for autopay with a valid card. Once you do auto pay it will packed the price down.

So this is how it works , unless you swipe your card for auto pay it doesn't show the discounted price , final price is 149 plus taxes + $50 for first month

Even if you sign up for the minimum one month of service, you are only paying $100 for the phone + plan whereas buying the phone alone costs you $250.

Everyone including at&t is strict nowadays. It isn't like the good old days with at&t. That is from my experience. Prepaid is even more strict than postpaid because they sell phones much cheaper and have cheaper monthly plans. The good news is that prepaid is still compatible with redpocket and others..... I am a redpocket user.
Is it compatible with Cricket?
