If having an unlocked phone is important to you without planning on switching to AT&T and without spending much to keep ATT line active,
1. Deactivate Autopay.
2. Change plan to 20cents/minute plan. (On this plan, if you don't use the phone, you pay nothing.)
3. Reload a minimum ($25 I believe)
4. If $25 has a validity of 3 months, call ATT to extend validity about a week before the validity expires.
5. Request for unlock after 6 months.

I would like to follow these instructions. Do you know if I can use an esim from another carrier also or is the esim locked to AT&T? I would like to use Airalo while waiting the 6 months.

edit---- esim is locked to carrier until the phone is unlocked
