TP-Link Archer AX50
The best Wi-Fi router
In our tests the TP-Link Archer AX50 created a speedy, responsive network even from across a medium house. You have to spend a lot more on a router—or a mesh kit if you have a very large home—to get anything even a little better. It's our first WI-Fi 6 (802.11ax) router pick.

The TP-Link Archer AX50 is reasonably priced, yet it can handle a growing selection of laptops and smart devices while surpassing the performance of routers that cost twice as much. It's generally speedy and able to reach long range, it has little lag even when the network is busy, and it's a great choice if you have a high-performance internet service plan. It's compatible with Wi-Fi 6, the latest wireless standard, and it comes with built-in security in the form of a lifetime subscription to updates.

TP-Link Archer AX20
If our main pick is unavailable
The Archer AX20 offers fewer features than our pick for a slightly lower price, but in most cases it can keep up in throughput, responsiveness, and ease of setup.

If our pick is out of stock or its price is more than $30 higher, you should consider the TP-Link Archer AX20 instead. The AX20 looks like the AX50 and offers a strong, responsive network that's nearly as good, especially if your house isn't larger than our 2,300-square-foot-test home. But it's not quite as fast at longer ranges, and TP-Link sacrifices a few advanced features and settings in its administration interface to meet the lower price

OTHER THINGS TO NOTE:

1. Donknows has a review on the AX3000 (Archer AX 50) this has thoroughly been discredited on this thread.

Quote from PeteyTheStriker :
As was mentioned by me and a few others, that DONGKNOWS review is poorly done. It is not an apples to apples comparison, he used a router with a brand new firmware comparing to an identical router with firmware over 6 months old which had major problems just like any other router around that time. It takes time to work out the bugs and TP-Link, Netgear, Asus to name a few all put out routers with bugged performance with their first set of Wifi 6 routers. So yeah..... Important to make apples to apples instead of reading something without understanding the testing. If he did it the correct way he would have had both side by side on the same firmware. The routers are identical outside USB 3.0 port and Homecare included on one, so you will get identical performance results with the same firmware.

2. CAT7, a CAT 6 or CAT5e cable is needed for gigabit Ethernet. Most cables made for the last 10 years are already 5e, so just saying that cables are usually never a bottleneck.

Stupid question: Is the 5G Mhz/band/Spectrum (or whatever it's called) on the wifi router the same kind of "5G" that is being marketed for the latest set of phones (iphone 12 with 5G and the 5G offered by Verizon, ATT etc)?

Yes, I did see the app has "in app purchases". But I would think that you would need the phone ID to make the in app purchase not for just downloading an app with the ability to purchase in app. What's the logic of requiring the phone ID upfront as opposed to when the purchase is actually made? And when a purchase is made within the app, do you again have to enter the phone ID?

Again, I am trying to understand the logic here.
That I am not sure about, but its an Apple thing. I use android and dont get things like that when I use the netgear app. You would have to probably read through a lot of terms and conditions to find out why it requires it, but I can tell you Apple is probably to blame, lol.

As mentioned its completely different. 5G stands for 5th Generation of cellular network.

Does "Dong" really "know"? He tested 2 identical systems with different firmware. Not an apples-to-apples comparison by "Dongknows".
How can you guarantee that AX50 and AX3000 will get the same firmware upgrade? Maybe that's why there is a price different between them. As you say, firmware can make or break the performance. Or do you work at TP link and know that?

Unfortunately, I can't guarantee anything and I don't work for TP. I don't think you will see any real world difference between the two but something tells me you are OCD (not saying this in a bad way, maybe I should say way too "detailed oriented") and nothing anyone says here will make you think otherwise. You might as well pay the $20 more and get the better marketed one as that money may be far worth for the mental peace it will bring you.

I think I am OCD as well but not on this one when there likely won't be a real world difference.

100/10 from Spectrum. Have a 3.0 modem and a R7000. Would this be an upgrade? Also ran an IP scanner and I have 24 iOT devices/tvs/echos etc...etc

Anyone test this on a note 10? I just hooked mine up. Using 2.4 or 5ghz I'm barely getting 2mpbs. I see the little 6 icon on my cell above the wifi connection. Flipping back to my deco system the speeds are back to normal. Speeds seem to be fine on the ax50 and my imac

Can anyone chime in on my thinking. If I plug a ext drive into the router and change NBpro to save to the network drive. Would I be able to direct plex on the firesticks to the network drive without having plex running on my laptop? Or do I still have to have a PC acting as a server?

I just setup the router (ssids) the same name and with the same password if you don't want to re-enter it on each device. If you currently have a TP-link you might even be able to export the config file so most of the settings are the same. Most likely somewhere like 192.168.0.1, then Advanced Settings->Management->Settings->Backup. Backup that file to your computer, then upload it to the new router.

If you shared your password (with a neighbor, for example), now is a good time to change it to lock anyone out. Also, just a heads up: your wifi password doesn't need to be that complicated / contain special characters UPPER or lower case unless you have a real reason to (if you don't know exactly what that is, you don't need it complicated). I setup all of my routers wifi passes to 'hotdog123'. It's just the password for access to your internet, and I doubt that anyone will guess that! Makes it much easier to remember or give to a friend.

https://www.newegg.com/asus-rt-ax...-_-Product

Newegg has the new AX55 for $100 shipped.

Looks like a 2x2 BCM6755 SoC based on clock speed listed, but there's no real info or internal pics yet. ASUS claims "large homes", but I don't see how this is any different than the AX56U in terms of hardware. I was hoping its a Qualcomm model, but they dont make a 1.5Ghz SoC from what I can see.

Could have a different OEM, amplifiers, and PCB might be designed to replace the AX58U as the BoM cost is quite high for a "2x2" router. AX82U sorta replaces that in terms of design (fully enabled 4x4 Radio), Price may shift down from 230>200.

Theres also an AX68U coming which will likely have a main 3x3 5G radio. Prices of AX routers are coming down. These prices or "deals" aren't going to be deals 3-5 months down the line Smilie

$100 will be standard price for AX1800 IMO. (sales dipping into 70-80 USD).

Edit: Whoever wrote this WIKI [shoutwiki.com]page is WRONG. The AX55 has a different FCCID and back rear output design.

maybe you will be comforted by the fact that most won't see a performance difference between the AX1800 and AX3000. Of course, if you have a larger house or tons of equipment connected to it, then maybe it would make a difference.
Oh I live in a small apartment. I'll get the ax1800 if that's the case

Also ill only be using my iPhone, laptop, tv and ps5 with it. Maybe an amazon device too..maybe

AX3000 (2400mbps + 576) is just HT160 bandwidth on 5G.. which needs closer range to really function properly. 160mhz device (AX200/201) is also required for close range throughput of up to 2400mbps.

AX1800 (1200mbps HT80 + 576) is more logical for practical wireless use, especially with 5G limitations and channel allocation. PS5 is 80mhz, iphone is 80mhz.

I'd personally wait though. Prices are dropping and 2x2 is entry.. my2c.

Not sure if this is really a "leak" but ASUS has an AX68U AX2700 class router coming which has 3x3 + 3x3 radios and should be a better alternative to most of the 2x2 crap.

This should be the base line upgrade for AC1750 users (The most popular AC router class)
