FYI HP's Instant Ink Free Printing for life plan ends in December, at which time that tier will be $0.99 per month. On the plus side, you will be able to roll your unused pages from month to month.
I bought one of these last year for $30. Finally had to bust into it a month ago.

Out of the box, printing was horrible. Margins weren't right, printing was skipping lines...I ended up cleaning the heads, printing test pages and reprinting pages 10+ times with no luck.

Eventually I updated the firmware and it started printing correctly. From then, printing was pretty good, but:
1. You have to keep the printing app open until your print job is done...if your phone goes to sleep in the middle of a print, your job stops midway through.
2. After troubleshooting the out-of-the-box issues, I had about 10 pages of black ink left on the starter cartridges.

I don't know how they ship something so broken. I searched for replacement ink and it was more expensive than the printer, so I got a laser printer (canon lbp622cdw - color laser for ~$225)

Save yourself some headaches and just get a laser printer. It's more money but they are better in almost every aspect.

I thought instant ink is free only for 15 pages per month. Does it offer unlimited page print for first four month and then you need to subscribe to instant in plan. Any idea?

What are the qualifications for a free trial?

When you purchase a new printer you may be offered a free trial during printer setup. To qualify, you must enroll for Instant Ink within 7 days of printer setup.

If a free trial is offered, all paid plans are eligible. Regardless of the paid plan you choose, the first 300 pages per month are included in the free trial. Charges for additional page sets will still apply according to the plan you selected.

With printers labeled "Instant Ink Ready," the ink cartridges included will only work if you start a subscription with HP Instant Ink program. If you want to print without a subscription, you'll need to buy ink cartridges additionally, or look for another printer that is not "Instant Ink Ready."

You can. Or you can subscribe to a per month page program, and they will ship you ink when you are low.

You can be printing full page color prints or a page with a single text letter on it, and either way it counts as 1 page.

Can buy normal cartridges also for it, but I was on free plan of Instant Ink, like I could print 15 pages full of color every month and pay nothing, now I need to pay $1/month for it. When ink cartridges gets finished HP sends me new cartridges to replace it. Although I feel it is way too expensive at almost $0.10/page, it is almost Print prices at staples, kinkos, etc. but real value is when you print photos with it, like full page photo just counts 1 page and I love printing out my family photos in 8x10 photo paper and putting it up on display with dollar tree case.
