FYI HP's Instant Ink Free Printing for life plan ends in December, at which time that tier will be $0.99 per month. On the plus side, you will be able to roll your unused pages from month to month.
I bought one of these last year for $30. Finally had to bust into it a month ago.

Out of the box, printing was horrible. Margins weren't right, printing was skipping lines...I ended up cleaning the heads, printing test pages and reprinting pages 10+ times with no luck.

Eventually I updated the firmware and it started printing correctly. From then, printing was pretty good, but:
1. You have to keep the printing app open until your print job is done...if your phone goes to sleep in the middle of a print, your job stops midway through.
2. After troubleshooting the out-of-the-box issues, I had about 10 pages of black ink left on the starter cartridges.

I don't know how they ship something so broken. I searched for replacement ink and it was more expensive than the printer, so I got a laser printer (canon lbp622cdw - color laser for ~$225)

Save yourself some headaches and just get a laser printer. It's more money but they are better in almost every aspect.
Printing is now subscription based?

I am on the free plan for Instant Ink that ends at year end. How and when do I cancel my subscription so that I'm not charged? I plan to just buy ink. TIA?

This a terrible printer. I smashed it out of frustration. This had issues from day 1.
I did the same with one of the HP's most expensive Officejet lineup printers, then bought a cheap Envy series one form BestBuy, now my printer won't recognize the inks that HP sent to me recently. This is my 3rd printer in last four years that I had to throw into garbage. Finally lesson learned, not gonna buy HP junks anymore. Looking for Laser printers right now.

How about the scanner functionality? Do you have to pay to use the scanner too? or just for printing?
Sorry just saw this. The scanner is free to use and seems to work as well as you'd expect.

Just about 2 years ago, 11/8/2018, I got the HP DeskJet 2624 also through a slickdeal for $20. We print very little. I think we went over one month at the start of school-from-home when kids were printing out assignments as if paper grew on trees 😂 (waitasecond...)

Yes, the 15-pages free every month is going away in December. I thought about whether this printer deserves to stay plugged in. In the end, yes, I will continue to pay $1 per month to keep it around and here are the reasons why:
  1. It has a scanner, and the HP Smart app on iPhone is fantastic. I can scan to PDF directly on my phone and then either email it, or send the PDF to Adobe Fill and Sign, to "sign the form" and then email it from there. THIS is the #1 reason why I'm keeping it around.
  2. At $12/year, for the little amount that we print, we are still saving money. Prior to 2018, we were buying new ink carts anyway for 3x that price because our old ink carts would always be dried up/clogged up every time we needed to print.
  3. I have an old HP Color LaserJet CM1312nfi MFP as a backup printer. That workhorse has been in our household for 12 years (I think I paid $350 for it back then). It's great for black and white and basic web page printouts, but doesn't have the detail/clarity of these newer printers. I haven't had to print a big print job in years since I can remember, but I think I still have a few thousand pages worth of toner left in ol' reliable if we need it.
  4. I bought that $4.99 Canon 8.5x11" pack of 50 pages of matte photo paper that was recently here on SD and also a $10 paper craft cutter (to help me cut straight). I will print photos with the 15/pages/mo of instant ink whenever it suits our fancy.
Overall, these Instant Ink hp printers are still worthy of the space and power plug they occupy in our house.

Hope this helps!
I'm in exactly the same position as you, including the date and model purchased (except I don't have a backup laser workhorse). I have also decided to keep the ink plan at $0.99 just for the convenience. This printer has really stood up of late with all the printing requirements that suddenly popped up due to everyone working/studying from home (maybe why HP chose this moment to scrap the free plan). Photo quality is not stellar, but overall worth it for the price.

I tried activating HP instant ink $2.99 plan. It says free trail 3 months only. But the printer box says 4 month Trail free. Please help me, what I am missing. Do I need to input any code? if so, where to get that from printer?

Every 30 days in our house, I shout, "Our printing month expires tomorrow and we've got 10 pages left... anybody got anything to print?"

I'm sorry they are going to start charging $1/mo but I knew it was too good to last. It's been totally worth it to not have to buy overpriced HP cartridges or $10 non-working generic cartridges.

Can anyone tell me why you cannot buy a brother inkjet printer right now?? Covid?? I've had my current brother printer for 11 years and used $7 ink the entire time and it's been a great machine. Now I go to order an updated model and they don't exist!

HP looked at all the free plan users and calculated how much they would earn if everyone paid 99 cents per month. Soon they will want to squeeze more from users and charge even more.

Got two of these last Black Friday. The print quality is just OK (we used them during remote school to print assignments) and loved the free ink plan.

The scanner functionality is actually pretty great and for $25 you get a decent scanner that can scan right to your phone in decent quality.

For $25 (even with the $1 a month ink plan) it's a decent deal. I have a color laser and the quality is much much better, but that's not a fair comparison.

I have had success getting the cartridges to work again by soaking in hot water. At least I can get them working well enough to print a page or two.

I print so rarely mine always go bad and I have stopped buying more ink. I wish I knew about this subscription thing in the past.

Which cartridges come with it? My HP printer uses expensive ones of course. See above.
HP67 last year they used HP63.

LOL same here, printing 0-15 pages per month. It's our spare printer and any fee charged is too much. Does anyone know if they will deduct from account balance or charge credit card on file for that $1 per month? I still have $10 in there from signing up last year.
