What WD has changed in the firmware for these, it is impossible to tell. But both EDFZ and EMFZ run at 7200 RPM while in the enclosure (research appears to show that this drive is 5400rpm). As a result, they tend to run hot. In the enclosure, my EDFZ drives run at 50-55C & 8.5W from the wall under load.

Also, I do use plex, does plex work well with usb drives?
Because my use was so limited, I eventually dropped it and started using Infuse. It's an app for the ATV that reads network shares directly and requires no additional setup. I'm sure you can find a Plex expert to help you, but if you don't need Plex-specific features, I would look elsewhere. There are probably other apps out there on your preferred OS/hardware that will play movie files from another machine without all the headache of Plex.
I use Channels App for live TV and DVR features. Setup was far, far, far simpler than Plex was. And it runs on an 8 year old machine (3770k), inside a Windows virtual machine. That's how little resources it requires. Someone else in this thread mentioned getting an 8th gen Intel or better to be able to handle the transcoding...that's a lot of hardware & money just to stream video.
Not saying Plex is bad -- there are obviously tens of thousands of happy users, but I found that the pain was not worth the result given the alternatives.
Best of luck to you!

There are plenty of legit reasons such as video editors and photographers. Then there are people that "can't throw anything away".

I can't help with the plex question.
